PS4 can - but not PS3 titles according to most conventional wisdom. This is because the architecture is different, requiring PS3 games to be run via emulation, but the PS4 isn't powerful enough to emulate a PS3 at reasonable speed. So some wizardry will need to be done to support PS3 on PS4 (or PSNow :-P). But, yeah, PS1/PS2 can easily be emulated by the machine, and I hope the MS reveal kicks Sony in the butt to do it.

A lot in terms of computational power for modern games, but at the end of they day you have a 1.6GHz core processor trying to emulate 6 3.2GHz Cell cores... a lot of computational power is needed for that

lol it's not a selling point for M$ users, they are graphics whores and never play old games. It's a gimmick. BC would be great for PS4 users though regarding PS2 discs, but PS3 gen didn't have much and all the great games are being remastered. BC is pointless, especially for M$ Xboner.

BC is only popular now since sony not doing it no one really cares what MS is offering except people with an xbox 1

i still have ps1, ps2, ps3, snes, n64, gamecube, dreamcast, xbox 360, gaming pc obviously (access to a lot of roms) plus ps4 might get a x1 just to get it

with all that said BC is really pointless if you want old games keep your old system.

Xbox one isn't really fully backward compatible though. I believe that I read its for only about 100 certain games where you put in the disc and then download the digital version. It is a small step but I would really prefer to take any 1 of my 130 game collection and put in the system and immediately play it.

Lets be real though. The system that plays the game the very best is the what the game was made for. The fat ps3 didn't play all ps2 games and there were bugs in many games. Xbox one has small library of Xbox 360..... Better off using a cheap ps3. They are so cheap and they are small.

However I think sony should make it so that the definitive editions of games are free to unlock if you own the ps3 version. :)

backwards compatibility has become this giant overhyped feature. it sounds great in theory, but really who actually wants to use this brand new machine just to play old games? i still have my old systems for the old games, i want new games for the new systems

You think xbox fans are excited with these titles payable on their xbox one.

Games currently compatible include:

  • A Kingdom for Keflings
  • A World of Keflings
  • Alien Hominid HD
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Banjo-Tooie
  • BattleBlock Theater
  • Defense Grid
  • Geometry Wars Evolved
  • Hexic HD
  • Jetpac Refuelled
  • Kameo
  • Mass Effect
  • N+
  • Perfect Dark
  • Perfect Dark Zero
  • Small Arms
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Toy Soldiers
  • Toy Soldiers: Cold War
  • Viva Piñata
  • Viva Piñata: TIP
  • Zuma

MS also needs permission from developers to get games to work on the xbone. Pretty much any popular game on xbox 360 will be denied. Same thing will happen if Sony tried to do something similar.

I would love for PS4 to have PS2 backwards compatibility. My old fat PS3 (60GB) died. It would be nice to play those games in HD and almost unlimited internal memory storage.
