Is Departed really good enough and worth it to watch on Bluray or just get it on DVD and wait for 007 on Bluray.

Yes. Is pizza really good enough for me to eat for supper or should I just have something else like hot dogs instead. It is about personal choise, how can you listen to someone else's judgement. What if that person's favorite movie is House of the Dead? Would you want to take their advice?

Departed sucked, get something else. Infernal Affairs was a million times better, and it wasn't even credited.

Scorsese who cares, now Coppola was the man. What pissed me off was Scorsese didn't even give the original Infernal Affairs any credit. Most filmmakers at least give a based on credit to a remake. Scorsese's punk

bout time, sony should have stuck with H264 or VC-1 from the start like HD-DVD, so im guessing Departed is in mpeg2? ill pick up the HD-DVD version, the only downside is that its a combo DVD version, i wish they would just make an HD-DVD version aswell

HD DVD is gonna lose, Sony owns way too many hollywood film studios. Toshiba has nothing, sooner or later the studios supporting Toshiba will give up. If I were I'd stop buying HD DVDs.

IMO, i dont think there will be any clear winner in the format war,  I think in a couple years digital distribution will become more mainstream, as more and more people download movies off iTunes, use windows media center, or download HD content off Marketplace it will become the next media and will be as popular as DVD, im just buying HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies to take advantage of my TV and sound :D

actually; open season, already out, is encoded in AVC on blu-ray (by sony) and it's suppose to be one the best looking blu-ray movies. Many reviews say that it truly shows that blu-ray can be more than a match for HD-DVD quality...

He never said Casino Royale would be the first,  he said all Bluray movies after Casino Royal will use AVC. I myself doubt that,  but im just pointing out he never said Open Season would be the first AVC movie on Bluray.

Judge the film on the visual quality of the movie. Not the codec used. Mpeg2 has shown to equal or trump vc-1 on certain titles. It depends on the style, film type, artistic direction, age of the film, transfer, bit rate, and hardware encoders/decoders and software. M$ at first was trying to shill their vc1 codec (FUD and propaganda = see avsforums) as the end-all-be-all codec and constantly bashed the BDAs decision to go with mpeg2 on some of their titles. In the end, it's up to the movie company and the quality should be judged by your own eyes, taking into consideration of all he factors I mentioned above.

Which movie to come out on Bluray and HD-DVD with different codecs (MPEG2 for BD, VC1 for HDDVD) has looked better on Bluray?

I said, "Mpeg2 has shown to EQUAL or TRUMP vc-1 on certain titles." I'll clarify... A few months ago everyone on the hd dvd side was bashing the movie "Hitch" and blaming the codec ONLY. Completely overlooking the other factors I mentioned. This was the scoop for blu-ray for months while hd dvd had a headstart (toshiba and labels). Over the last 6-8 months dual releases came in mpeg2 for blu-ray and almost all vc1 for hd dvd. Fast foward to the last 2 months and what we find is that certain titles that came out on blu-ray mpeg2 vs hd dvd vc1 look the same (egads! How it that possible!?). This is a mpeg2 to vc1 comparison for the same movie. Remember that mpeg2 was not supposed to even compete according to the M$ shills! And each title that has come out on mpeg2 recently has improved! This is a lot different compared to 6-8 months ago. There are some hd dvd movies that came out in vc1 which looked bad/average (Egads! How is that possible?!). And other blu-ray movies that have come out on mpeg2 look great (just as there are those that look bad/average). Remember, mpeg2 was NEVER supposed to look great. And vc1 was supposed to always look great. That's not the case. The bad looking movies are affected by all the factors I listed in my other post. And if blu-ray was to get a bad film like "Excalibur" or "Spartacus" it probably would look bad too. Just depends on the source. The good news (for Sony fans, not you) is that mpeg2 has caught up. And if the advanced coded mpg4 is needed. Then, movie companies will go that route. As you can see that those are becoming more common. The dual titles differences are negligible now because the main controling factor is the source material. The BDA's titles early on was not only affected by the source film. But also buggy firmware, bad transfers and player filters turned on (w/out the option to turn it off). This is why you are seeing more mpeg2 blu-ray movies and hd dvd vc1 films (same movie) get the same rating. Times have changed.

A few months ago everyone on the hd dvd was bashing the movie Hitch and blaming the codec ONLY. Completely overlooking the other factors I mentioned. This was the story for blu-ray for months while hd dvd had a headstart (toshiba and labels). Over the last 6 months dual releases came in mpeg2/vc1/or mpeg4 for blu-ray and almost all vc1 for hd dvd. Fast foward to the last 2 months and what we find is that certain titles that came out on blu-ray mpeg2 vs hd dvd vc1 look the same (egads! How it that possible!?). This is a mpeg2 to vc1 comparison. Remember that mpeg2 was not supposed to compete according to the M$ shills! And each title that has come out on mpe2 recently has gotten better. This is a lot different compared to 6 months ago. There are some hd dvd movies that came out in vc1 which looked bad (Egads! How is that possible?!). And others that have come out on mpeg2 look great. Remember, mpeg2 was NEVER supposed to look great. And vc1 was supposed to always look great. That's not the case. mpeg2 has caught up. And if the advanced coded mpg4 is needed. The most sad and abysmal part of this discussion gizmo is that people don't understand or *care* about the facts of the technology. You might as well slap a sticker on their heads saying "I'll make up stuff to fit my personal bias.  I believe the Earth is flat since its what my video game masters told me."

The truth is a video compression is, by definition, a compromise of quality to reduce size.

If you reduce compression to ZERO you receive the absolute maximum possible video quality.

Comparing MPEG2 (or heck even MPEG1) to VC1 is simply a matter of ratio. To get a high quality image how big of a filesize do you need?

Clearly VC1 compresses higher for the same quality of space but then again with Blueray capacity it doesn't really matter does it?

In other words your "MPEG2 has shown to equal or trump VC1 on certain titles" quote was badly written?
MPEG2 should still never be used...VC1 and AVC could look just as good and take up less space at the same time,  which in turn allows for more extras,  and more sound options.

[QUOTE="copperheadfang"][QUOTE="xxgunslingerxx"]If you liked the departed you should watch the chinese orignal which is like 10 times better look up inffernal affairspimperjones
Inffernal affairs was verygood but c'mon man Scorsese

Scorsese who cares, now Coppola was the man. What pissed me off was Scorsese didn't even give the original Infernal Affairs any credit. Most filmmakers at least give a based on credit to a remake. Scorsese's punk

Well he did give it credit when he won the Golden Globe For Best Director. Cut the Man some Slack! Here is crossing fingers for the Oscar... I got it on DVD because of my wife. A very dissapointing DVD transfer. Can't wait to get t on Blu-Ray.

[QUOTE="gizmo_logix"][QUOTE="m3Boarder32"][QUOTE="gizmo_logix"][QUOTE="pimperjones"]Starting from Casino Royal all BluRay will use AVC H264, now it's still MPG2. m3Boarder32

Then, movie companies will go that route. As you can see that those are becoming more common. The dual titles difference are negligible now because the main controling factor is the source material.

In other words your "MPEG2 has shown to equal or trump VC1 on certain titles" quote was badly written?
MPEG2 should still never be used...VC1 and AVC could look just as good and take up less space at the same time, which in turn allows for more extras, and more sound options.

...And if using VC1 costs extra money due to licensing from Microsoft I suppose this is okay?
Even if Blueray has the extra capacity on a disc so that space becomes mute anyways?

What's the logic of your argument?  To pump your stocks or what?  Why the MPG hate?  It's a staple of the video world...

Yes. That's why I clarified (see above). Yet, that's something and the M$ shills in Redmond will not do. They will be fighting a losing battle on negligible differences since blu-ray already has the capacity (with serves the PC storage market, not just the movie market). The use of mpeg2 was necessary early on. And still will be for some titles (licensing reasons). You should know that. When you get a chance. Try to use that "compresion" and "extras" as a selling point to some average joe in best buy that doesn't care about that stuff but rather just wants to watch his favorite movie. In the meantime the extras will come to blu-ray as well as the advanced audio (DTS HD MA/TrueHD). This is something you can't stop. Try as you might. And as you alluded to above...more MPEG4 titles are on the horizon. Which just makes "compression" less an argument for only vc1.

Enough with the "Bluray has enough capacity to keep using MPEG2" BS ok...Crank is 90 minutes long and fills up the entire 50GB, if its 100 minutes long, it would not have fit on a 50GB disk...If Crank would have used 6.1 or 7.1 audio instead of 5.1 it would not have fit...

The Descent fills up 49GB and its actually using AVC, if they would have used MPEG2 it would not have fit...

Kingdom of Heaven fills up 46GB by using MPEG2, and it has absolutely ZERO Extras. It's just the movie, nothing more.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, the more they can fit on the disk the better.
