my seagate external hard drive is fairly new, but my ps3 doesnt seem to recongnize it...

Is the ps3 suppose to read to all the files and put them in into the ctergory automatically or do I have to create folders like: music, video and pictures on the external harddrive?

because, when I connect my harddrive, the ps3 reads, but i cant find the files anywhere

Good, then in which format does it have to be formatted? Because mine is in NTFS and does not work either.

Maybe it's the other way around and that your Seagate doesn't recognize your PS3???
Ever think of that???

That's not what I said. I was wondering if NTFS was under some kind of restriction by Microsith.

nope. FAT32 is good for using multiple OS's...so that could be one reason.

I own a Seagate 80gb external hardrive completely formated in fat32. My Playstation 3 will not recognize a hardrive being present when I hook it up via USB cable. However I have instant confirmation when I hook it up to the laptop. I even made a PS# folder with the different file types such as PS3->Video etc. Although I understand that would not effect whether or not it was recognized by the PS3. My question is, are there maybe drivers that are neccasary to download (probably not possible) so that the ps3 can recognize things like USB 2.0? I'm still learning the technical basics but anyone with information would be greatly appreciated.

i had the same problem with my hard drive. your ps3 should know that it's connected, but like you said, it cant find the files in the storage device. so before you go into the storage device, press triangle while on it and it'll give you an option to display all files. it should be there.

The hard disk needs to be in FAT32 format and the files must be placed in MUSIC,PHOTO,VIDEO and GAME folder respectively.Files bigger than 4gb will not get copied on FAT32 HDD.I think sony chose this format to prevent piracy.

Did you format the drive using XP? XP {I'm not sure but I think Vista as well] doesn't allow formating a hard drive to FAT32 if it is larger than 30 gigs. it will just format it to NTFS instead. You could either make multiple 30 gig pertitions or use third party software to format such as this http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

This information is FALSE. The hard drive "MUST" be formatted in FAT 32.
