Just bought mine today, I put it inside my tv stand on the top shelf. I noticed it puts out a lot of heat, am I better off to put it on the very top so it's not surrounded by anything?

yes I haven't heard of PS3s overheating a lot, but the more air it can breath, the better.

I decided that it was best to put mine on top, rather than inside. I wouldn't recommend having it enclosed anywhere.

I haven't seen any reports of overheating yet, but it doesn't mean they wont. Its better to be safe than sorry. Confined spaces aren't ideal for dissipating heat, so staying away from trapping it in a box is a good idea.

If you dive into the manual, they recommend at least 4 inches of space between both the back and the right hand side (not the HDD side) where the main vents are. Mine is in an enclosed area but following those restrictions. I've played it for 4 hours while in that space and had no problems.

While I do agree it puts out a lot of heat, I am still impressed by how quiet the system is. It's barely an audible whir. Granted, I don't own an Xbox360 for comparison's purposes but I've heard that that thing sounds like a jet engine. I think as long as you leave it in an open area, it should be fine.
