Why doesn't Rockstar have a female as a lead playable character? It would add something new and interesting.

meh i think a lot of people would lose interest in GTA if that happened. unless they're really badass, women as protagonists aren't really successful, it will be hard for Rockstar to pull off.

becuz it really doesnt matter at all. Give me at least one reasonable reason why a female character should be chosen over a male character in a game like GTA? I dont mind female characters that much, I love Heavenly Sword, but its only a few times where a female character works. I usually hate ho women are protriated in anyways. Either they make them unnecessarily hot and they try to go for that bad ass look, that never works and makes it look like they are trying too hard to promote a independent woman. And even if one of the protagonist in GTA5 were a woman, it wouldnt have been believable (which is why woman protagonist rarely work)

It would add something new and interesting.

How so? Playing as a woman doesn't have to mean anything it would be a character with the personality they chose to give to the character.

I don't think that playing as a women would be any different. The main thing would be interactions with hookers, they wouldn't exist. But otherwise I don't see why a women wouldn't be as badass as a male. other than the way society portrays women as weaker than men

They probably dont because it would be bad press and woman rights groups would be all over them for portraying a woman as a mass murdering psycho. It's not like women dont play a role in the game anyways. Plus im sure most of the demographic of GTA buyers will be male and would probably prefer to play as such.

Its not rockstar, its the entire media industry, you've idolised rockstar because they make a game you like. How many gangster, cop, action films are there with women as the main role? Some may say its sexist, but its the way its been for so long. I though though rockstar may have made a 'create your own character' mode.

I've played through Saints Row 2 and 3 as a female main character and it was a refreshing experience.

I know they're two totally seperate games, but I really don't see the big deal if you can do it in Saints Row without any controversy, why not in GTA?

Sophette

Because that isn't their vision for the game. I'm sick of people always bringing up race and sex diversity in video games. It is up to the developers.

Now lets be a bit rational here. The stories of GTA NEVER fit with female characters. No man falls in love with a woman to betray her and shoot her in the face, and she lives, then escapes an escort convoy out of sheer luck to then have the chance for revenge. No female kills 15 people and then is sent to prison for life but manages to get out in 11 and is sent to a drug meeting once she is released. No female goes from the ghetto gang life to jumping out of planes, working for rappers, and bunny hopping on bikes 20 feet in the air. No woman can be pictured doing any of that. Don't get me started on European women.

Saints Row works with that but GTA isn't Saints Row. GTA gives you a real character, with a realistic background and personality.

it is a common fact that there are more male gamers (may it be casual or not) than female ones and i reckon it appeals to a wider audience hence more sales this way, since more people can get into the story and relate to it... i do not think that the reason behind it is sexism but rather the economics of the era, nothing more...

I suppose they could include an option to play as either a male or female character, but then they would have to write and record two unique sets of dialogue and likely two completely separate stories. Like Devilish said, a story that works for a male lead likely wouldn't work for a female lead, and vice versa. It may work with Saints Row, but Grand Theft Auto is far more story driven.

As for making a game based exclusively around a female lead, I don't think that will happen. Simply put, many male gamers don't like playing the role of a woman.

when i come to think of it most of the story writers for these games are male, i reckon they cannot provide a female story with proper weight, that might be one of the many reasons as well...

I'm okay with playing as Samus in Metroid games or as Catwoman in parts of Arkham City, but GTA is a series for male protagonists. I don't think that a female character should be forced into every kind of game just for the sake of having one.

Because picking up gigolos in your car and then running them over to get your money back just lacks the appeal of doing the same to prostitutes

I dunno, I think it could be interesting. I'm thinking Kelly Lynch's Jude from Cold Around the Heart. Or maybe an outlaw version of Ziva David; her character on NCIS, played by Coté de Pablo will dissuade you forever that women can't be badass. To tell you the truth, picking up prostitutes got old with Vice City for me.

Saint's Row solves the problem perfectly fine

If only Saint's Row was better (I liked the 2nd just fine, but the Third was a real disappointment...don't ask me to explain...just my opinion).

Seems like we have alot of games with female leads so its not like it would be fresh or anything. Perhaps if it fit their story.
