i dont think the PC will ever get a game with a 10 rating because of the hardware variables. For console the power is always the same thsu performance in each game the same for each unit. for pc theres the graphics card, ram, CPU, and much more. this can make or break the experience fo gamers thus losing it score. like crysis. its beautiful but then it got a dismerit for being too beautiful thus needing a better rig to play it.

this is my view of it. feel free to contradic me if you have a good arguement against me or feel free to add!

When people get overwhelmed by pc components I lol, because when they go outside Windows... so many different architectures and operating systems based off of a kernel. Now this is not what you want to hear, I don't agree with this, a game can't get a 10 on the pc because it's not good enough maybe? I don't think reviewers take into account of this, I have never seen a game getting marked down because they don't have an arm build. The only solution to this is to make their engine open source and let the community port it to other architectures. There isn't just x86 fyi. Itanium, etc. etc.

Life could get a 10. Wait, life is not perfect either! No game will ever deserve a 10! A 9.5 means it is really good though.

It is because PC games have a smaller budget, and therefore cannot bribe gaming sites.

Honostly, the day GTA got a 10/10 is the day reviews officially became redundant.

10/10 doesn't mean a game is perfect firstly. I dont see what these variables have to do with. The reviewer will play whats in front of them based on their own experiences. Crysis' didn't get the perfect score because of the optimisation of what they experienced - something like 'the game will laugh at any GPU that you throw at it'

The only thing said that has been correct so far. A 10 never means a game is perfect. It simply means the game is a must have because everything it does attempt to do it executes very well. Anyway, if you're talking about Gamespot specifically, they hardly ever give out 10s, and it doesn't matter anyway because their reviews are only so-so IMO.

No reviewer would ever give any game a perfect 10, unless he was an idiot. Perfection by its very definition is unachievable. That's why people who post user reviews like "OMG, bestest gamez eva, teh grafix are fentastic! 100 out of 10" aren't headhunted by gaming magazines.

You will sometimes see listed as a bad point in a review "doesn't run too well on low end systems". This is a note to the buyer and shouldn't effect the end score.

It would be like someone reviewing a fashion line and saying "the clothes are gorgeous, but they didn't look so good when I put them on my fat mother".

I think it has more to do with that a console game only has to compete with other games on that console, while PC games have to compete with a 20 year old library because backwards compatability between operating systems is usually very good.

It doesn't but it does sting that some pretty sketchy titles get a 10 and a PC title never has.

Bingo. Unlike console gamers, if there's something we don't like about the game, we look for mods. :)

C'mon, a 10 doesn't mean "Perfection by definition impossible to attain". At least I've never stumbled upon that criteria. That would just be silly and would immediately render the scale a 1-9,5.

10 means perfect = no room for improvement. There is no such game and there will never be one.

Also hardware has nothing to do with games, the console version of games doesn't score higher because of the PC hardware complexity, they do so because console reviewers looks at different things when they review a console game, hype, extremely easy to play but with lots of action and again hype, because there's no way a reviewer can five a game from some company they like a bad score even if the game is crap.

I guess they didn't think there aren't any PC games worth a 10, their loss. I'm thinking with games like Half-life failing to score 10 in the past it doesn't feel right to hand out 10s to new games either. Of course one could then ask why didn't HL1 etc. get a 10 in the first place, or why the same doesn't apply to consoles. It could just be that the reviewers happen to enjoy consoles more, go at gamerankings and look at the scores between multiplats - Oblivion, Bioshock, L4D, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, UT3, The Orange Box ..the highest score always goes to a console version, unless it's significantly compromised like DAO or something.

No, the games get 10's because consolites dont mind forking out lots of EXTRA money for games, DLC's etc.. So companies can pay review sites for good reviews etc. Plus no game deserves a 10.

Depends, pc has superior standards, but some games are rated higher than the consoles when they are dumb down and the pc has superior standards. Eg: Mass effect. If a game gets a 10 on pc it has to be a pc exlcusive made by a pretty damn good company.

pc community tends to have higher standards. if gears of war was originally released on pc, would it get 9,6? no it wouldnt, cos its pretty shallow. hl2, which is way better only got 9.2, which imo is accurate, games get rated so unevenly i think.

i think portal is the closest to a perfect game that i have played, it did what it meant to do perfectly. puzzles are the right difficulty, graphics are great, humour is top notch, and its not too long. the perfect game because it did what it was supposed to. perfect doesnt necessarily mean best if you take it in this context.

My thoughts exactly... All this hooplah over a stupid number system is stupid anyways. If a game sounds good to you, go play it. Some of the best games I've played have a metacritic score in the 70 range.

Imo only Starcraft and Crysis deserve a perfect 10, and I'd also argue about giving Crysis a 10 because of the aliens. It's not a score many games can achieve, it means that the game is flawless in every aspect.

Console games can achieve a 10 because they have much lower standards compared to PC games.

Thats total rubbish. Gamespot review the game on a particular machine, so if that rig is half decent and the game is well optimised and has good gameplay/graphics/story etc they'll rate it well.

3 Simple Steps :

- Make your own gaming website. Give it a good name like "Lamespot".

- Review a PC Game e.g. Doom - Wolfenstein 3D

- Rate it 10/10 or 11/10 if you like.

In the end.. Lamespot is history.
