Because he is not. On the first level right before the teleporter after you flip the switch Barney says:
"Yeah, nice work Gordan, flipping that switch and all. I can see your IT education really paid off."
And then you can clearly hear:
"Gee, thanks."

Seriously, wtf?

It mustn't be that clear, or about a billion and fifty nine million people who didn't hear it would have said something. But even if it is there - and i'll believe it when I hear it - that's the only thing he says in about 40 hours of Half Life gaming he's featured in.

I think the idea behind Freeman's muteness is that they are trying to immerse the player a little more by putting his dialogue in the player's hands.

Yes you do. It's just a random: "Gee, thanks" coming from nowhere.

But yeah, for ^, people really won't notice, but still it proves he isn't completely mute. (99.9% though)
I'd record a fraps video but people will think I just dubbed it or something.

Positive. Nobody is lip-synced to it, and the voice is defintely not Alyx's, Barneys, or the doctor who's name I just forgot.

It's Barney that says that. Kliener says "Alright Barney, your turn" or something of the sort and he replies with "Gee, thanks"

I agree. And I think that was a great move by them.

It wasn't him. They wouldn't make all the games with no Gordon dialogue, except for one line. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Hmmm... maybe you're right. But it really didn't sound like Barney -- maybe it's just my crappy integrated sound card lol.

ya, Barney says it.

And no, Gordon isnt a mute, Valve just wants the player to come up with their own dialogue.

I wonder if when he finally does speak, he will have a weird voice. Like that Arab priate from the third Pirates of the Caribean movie.

I think it's funny when people say "it lets you come up with your own dialogue" but when someone talks to me in that game all I do is move the mouse around as if "nodding my head" or jumping around like crazy...

I still keep Gordon mute :D.

Actually, I was playing Episode 2 a couple nights ago and noticed when you just get to White Forest and talk to Alyx's father alone, he talks about how the G-Man "made you say those exact words to him in Black Mesa." Those words being: "prepare for unforeseen circumstances."

It is Barney.. when the doc tells him it's his turn.. Replay that part and watch Barney.. he is lip synced to it as well. Gordon does not speak at all through any of the HL games.

Gordon says nothing.

Its to keep the player immersed - Valve doesent want the character talking on the players behalf.
