Desk...
I once bought a razer mousepad(not sure which one it was now, i know it had two surfaces, speed and control). it was 40 euro, and oh boy, what a waste of money.
i used 3 mouses on it. a4tech x710, logitech mx 518, and a razer copperhead. only the razer was PROBABLY better on it, but only by a really small margin.
unfortunately, after a half year intensive use, both surfaces were so worn down that the desk proved to be much much better for even the copperhead.
so yeah. since then, i just use my desk.

That's partly why I bought 30 mousemats, because each one will last me at least half a year and this type of mat is the last survivor I can find that will pair with my mouse. So as long as my mouse lasts me 15-20 years, so will my current combination of mouse and mousemat. Obviously another part of the reason why I bought so many mousemats is because I don't want to need one when they are discontinued. Because if that happens I'll have to buy a new laser mouse and I don't want one.
mousepad with wrist-rest against RSI (mostly use the computer for work).
The main advantage I see in a mousepad is the lessened resistance you can get from it. On my current wooden desk moving my mouse requires much more effort. On top of that moving my mouse on the desk also makes an annoying scraping sound. (On my old desk not using a mousepad was out of the question: it was glass)
