I thought it was a great game back in the day. It is somewhat dated when compaired to the RTS games of today.
If you're into RTS games you should drop Warcraft III and pick up Company of Heroes, or better yet CoC3 as it comes out this week!!!!!!
The best multiplayer I have ever played is in WCIII. And the food limit can be stopped in multiplayer aswell, just make the units have no food cost, and that's what plenty of people do. The rpg type heroes of the game makes heroes in multiplayer a keystone that makes you want to keep on playing, like getting new abilities to defeat your enemies armies. And the editor is super user friendly.
warcraft 3 was - is - a great rts, and at its time of release, it was probably the rts - proof that blizzard hasn't missed a step in developing and refining the rts genre
but, myself, i think games like dawn of war and company of heroes have just overtaken it - wc3 is a great game with 4 awesome and unique armies, but after playing with DoW's awesome resource system and brutal, gritty combat - and the coolness of squads - i just find it impossible to play warcraft 3 any more, but it'll always have a place in my heart!

"back in the day", man I feel out of date now. WC3 is the most recent RTS I've played, and I got it when it came out (the Collector's Edition!). And I haven't finished it yet...
I still consider WC3 to be pretty new. WC2 I consider old. :P
