Very nice damage model, free 2 play, and it's available on steam.

Check it out!  I'm having a ton of fun with it, much more than I expected.

I have the Xbox 360 verison called Birds of Steel and that's a lot of fun. I've played War Thunder on and off to mixed results. I find the PVP to be quite difficult and not always fun. The game also is very grindy, at least when i played it.

Have they expanded on the PvE options?

Yes it is good fun, from the makers of Star Conflict too. I find the interface a bit confusing when I first play, but you get used to it over time.

It was a while ago so I can't exactly remember if I used the mouse, I assume I would've. I tried to use a joystick as well and it didn't help much. I suppose I could give it another go, it might have been my PC being slow.

Do planes in this game turn with one button? I prefer games with planes which turn by rolling and pitching.

setting it to mouse only controls will enable instructor mode.... and make your life a million times easier. if you are playing the PVP without a joystick and dont have years of flight sim practice, the planes will feel completely out of control. with mouse only controls, and instructor, even a 6 year old can fly the planes and get kills.... my nieces and nephews do all the time.
