Hi everyone, basically i want some advice on something ive stumbled upon in vista, ive had poor gaming performance on my vista pc ever since i bought it, ive tried everything to no avail, disk cleanup, readyboost, ive purchased Driver Detective, Diskeeper, eusing registry cleaner, Drivercleaner.net, ive changed startup programs and services in msconfig, and windows defender, nothing ever made any difference,

Just recently during one of my endless experiments i decided to disable User Account Control- (Start\Control Panel\User Accounts\Turn User Account Control On Or Off) and since then every game i have plays at least 25% smoother, its made a massive difference, ive been able to increase graphics detail in every game, and they run smoother,

The reason for posting is because i dont understand this, has anyone else had a similar experience? i dont see how vista's UAC can have this sort of impact on games

UAC requires non signed or unidentified executables need admin privilages to run, in this case a confirmation your happy for it to run. That could hamper some parts of a game; possibly.

Turning this off negates that need for the confirmation and allows whatever to run whenever it feels the need.

its made a difference on numerous games, before i was running Gears of War on medium/low settings and it would stutter and freeze every few seconds, im now running it on high setting and its faster, smoother and more detailed than the 360 version!

I actually discovered this though whilst trying to get a respectable framerate from Stalker clear sky, it was literally freezing for around 2-3 seconds constantly, i disabled UAC and it runs beautifully now!

Many people have experianced this, well I can't tell you why it happens I can tell you that you are far from alone. Most Vista gamers do indeed disable the service, It's useless anyway.

I recomend Windows SystemCare 3, just try it and you will understand why. I would also not use ReadyBoost, I do not have a link at this time, but it has been shown that it will lower gaming performance. The sticks are much slower then real ram, and that is not a good thing, it will use this slow ram instead of You're pagefile sometimes, not good.

You're pagefile, is more then enough although one day I think we will see dedicated USB ram why not right? Untill then avoid ReadyBoost!

I hear you! Ever since I disabled the user account control, my system boot time has dramatically decreased, and all the menus have been running faster too. I would advise all Vista users to disable it; it's pretty much useless anyways

readyboost isnt just the usb devices. Readyboost also works on internal Robson Turbo Ram.

The difference is

a) speed and

b) the turbo ram is persistant state memory so it actually increases your performance by holding your most used files (booting etc), thus avoiding having to read the harddrive itself for them.

Also following this guide will speed your entire machine up by atleast 20 - 30 secs, depending on hardware etc. I definately recommend it.

i was tempted to do the same but have always been hesitant, ive heard it may be a security risk to deactivate it, but i think ill leave it off from now on.
