The number is the model number. Nvidia GeForce 6600 ( or 6200 or 7900). Usually the higher the number the more features or better performance you will get out of it. And no, you cannot upgrade the card itself. You can only buy a better card to replace the one you have now. Seeing your lack of PC knowledge, it would be best for you to go to a specialist to handle the hardware stuff.
Video Card Speed is very Relevant to the specific model, there are like 5 different nvidia geforce 6200's for instance. The biggest factors that effect a video card in speed by a technical stand point are the amount of pixel pipelines (geforce 6200 has 4), amount of video ram, and clock and engine speed.
First you should find out what bus type you have, PCI Express, AGP, or the few unlucky ones that have neither and are stuck with standard PCI Bus. With standard PCI bus you cant do much better than an ATI radeon x1300 (and believe me, that is not adequite for bioshock) Agp I believe goes up to atis x1950 and nvidias 7950. and If you have PCI express (most new computers do) you have pretty much freedom
In terms of numbers with Ati and Nvidia usually video cards are released in series, the current Nvidia series is the 8000 series, which features a few different cards: 8400, 8500, 8600, and 8800. And As i stated before an 8400 can be many different cards at many different 'speeds'
If your worried about PC gaming go out and get a high end card i.e nvidia geforce 8800 or the ati radeon hd2900, but if its bioshock you want you should be fine with a good mid-range card like the geforce 8500 or 8600
THough you dont really seem like a computer specialist so if you wanted to upgrade for pc gaming, id probably talk to geeksquad at best buy or someone who is knowledgable.
