So, who here knows monitors?

I've currently got 2 22" lcds at 1680x1050

I was thinking about upgrading to 27" screens, but can't decide if I should go for 1080p or 2560x1440

With a budget of about $600, I could get two @1080p, or one at 1440

Is 1440 worth the $$?

Get a 24in 144hz Asus (250ish)or 27in Asus 1440p ($550). Maybe the Dell 27in 1440p monitor around $600. 27in is to big for 1080p IMO 24in the highest you should go for that res.

Remember though 1440p is demanding and you will want a decent GPU take advantage of it and same goes for 120 fps. But odds are if you get a 27in 1080p monitor you will want high AA.

IMO if you can afford a 1440p and have the GPU for it and are not a seriously competitve shooter gamer. I see know reason to not get one

i have a dell u2711 2560x1440 monitor, and a 1080p monitor, I game on both daliy, and i have a hard time saying that 1440p is superior...the cost is almost double and the performance of games will go down. Only really advantage so far from the higher res is being able to fit more on screen and a little bit better color quality. Also webpage browsing is very crappy at 1440p, even zooming into pages to help with the size difference doesnt help much and distorts/blurs the text quite a bit. Its obvious most websites are designed with 1080p as its template... and you will notice it at 1440p how hard it is on your eyes to see website text.

Also with OLED tech in its beginning... u may want one of those instead... or maybe one with G-sync if that turns out good and u have an nvidia card. But I doubt g-sync will spread unless every monitor company puts it in theirs.

So buy a cheaper 1080p monitor and then in a couple years buy a 1440p OLED monitor maybe.

1440p. You'll appreciate the screen uniformity and having your desk space back.

@nicecall: that's weird, web page text should never be blurry regardless of the resolution. text isn't based on the number pixels, like some type of images, so changing its size (which is what zooming does) should never make it blurry.

I just went from 1080 to 1440 and damn happy I did. I went with a dell "U2713HM" and love it and the hit to performance was not bad at all for me. That's all I can add to your question, good luck.

to each his own i guess lol. 1080p looks fine on a 27" unless you see thru a microscope

I remember when I went to 27" 1080 and at first the jaggies drove me crazy even with aa on but eventually I got used t it and thought it looked good. 24" does have the advantage to sharpness at 1080 bit I think 27" 1080 still looks good so long as you have aa on.

Still I would go 1440 if you can...it's pretty nice. :)

I am considering going 1440. I can own way more people on my 27" though. It seems that a 24" screen is like having 720p on an iphone. All that extra gpu power for only a couple of inches if screen space. I usually switch between my rad-9 and 950d. I only use my 23" ips for xbox 360

I have yet to see an IPS panel (in person) that can convince me to leave my TN behind.

What TN panel do you have?
