They were trying to prevent people from stealing their games. Their DRM scheme was so shoddy, they had to give away free games to avoid a class action lawsuit and the loss of all their customers. Looks to me like the pirates won this batle without even lifting a finger. EA literally shot themselves in the foot, again.SKaREO

Aye, +1 from here definitely.I cant undarstand what are you all so pissed about DRM.
So it demmands online connection, most of us have 24\7 connection anyways, and there is like 1% who are using modems,
who cares?! realy?! the game is fun, there are some bugs but EA is working on fixing them, they fixed many issues already,
enjoying the game, life is good, WTF people?! leave it already!Farxi
The online connection wasn't the problem, it was the fact that the servers were shat the first few days of release.

and the fact that when the game was modded, it was discovered that the servers do nothing but host save files

From EA's mouth:
"DRM is a failed dead-end strategy; it's not a viable strategy for the gaming business. So what we tried to do creatively is build an online service in the SimCity universe and that's what we sought to achieve. For the folks who have conspiracy theories about evil suits at EA forcing DRM down the throats of Maxis, that's not the case at all," he said with a laugh.
Translation: "we believe our audience to be complete gullible tools, so we're going to continue to spew this utter bullsh!t excuse to cover our asses for implementing a useless, draconian method to control and limit our userbase under a new "vision" of what we wish our game to achieve, and in the meantime dismissively toss out the "conspiracy theorist" label at those foolish, deluded people in the attempt to discredit them without the slightest effort aside from outright insult and belittlement on our part." (with a laugh).
These guys are truly unbelievable. It's insulting how much contempt and disdain they are showing towards gamers that they could even try to come out and say such things especially after what has just happened. There is no reaon they couldn't have done their "vision" for Simcity to have a multiplayer element while at the same time having an offline one.
But hey, maybe they are in fact telling the truth. I mean, it's not like EA has lied in the past. Oh, wait....

EA Maxis have been talking more about next years SimCity reboot, and the new GlassBox engine thats powering it. Just earlier we went inside the GlassBox engine to talk a bit about how the new tech will work differently to SimCity games of old, but theres even more good news. Shacknews sat in on a GDC panel in which Maxis confirmed that the new engine has been designed with modders in mind.
Creative director Ocean Quigley said that the new SimCity will use the same package format The Sims and SimCity 4 used, which means itll be more familiar to seasoned SimCity tweakers. We know modding is hugely important to our community, Quigley said. We know the reason why people are still playing SimCity 4 ten years later is because the modding community has kept it alive. GlassBox is built to be moddable, but beyond that we havent announced anything.
We dont know if theres an official SDK in the works, then. Yet. Even without one, top modders will hopefully be able to tinker with the new engines insides and bring us a new wave of add-ons and updates, so hooray for that. Have a look at the SimCity trailer for an early look at how its coming along.
