Question about Final Fantasy XI

Yo. I'm currently in the process of patching FFXI for the first time (says over 2 hours left), and I was wondering about something.

I've got a friend who plays on the 360 version, and he bought a Gold World Pass for me, and gave me a code. How do I do it? Everywhere says while creating a character, but will it be obvious when I'm doing it? Do I need to do anything specific?
