Hi

Would it be worth upgrading my current setup with an i5 2xxx series CPU be worth it?

Obviously I would also need a fairly decent MOBO and DDR3 RAM aswell if it was, so if you could also suggest some not too expensive options in that area aswell I would be very greatful. :)

Thanks.

Jiggly went from an Extreme edition C2Q (QX6700, I think) @3.4GHz+ to a 2600K (so now he never dips below 9,000fps in QL) and he says it was worth it. I'm hoping to upgrade my C2Q, soon, but I'm still tossing up whether to just get a 2500K or wait for 3570K.

Going off early reviews Ivy Bridge is nothing to get excited about. And damn, I can't see temps getting any better, than the ES chips that have been tested.

Only some games, like BF3 64 maps, or WoW maxed will see the difference. You should be able to run most games on high/max still with Q6600. I too was thinking of upgrading to i2500k this year, its a great CPU, but then I realised I don't really need to so I can wait more. With Ivy bridge just being the "tock" version, I am waiting on Haswell series next year. And I don't really see the Q6600 holding me back much till next year.

I went from a q6600 @3.6 to a 2600k and it makes everything much more fluid in game, and it raised my PC's baseline of performance so future upgrades certainly won't be held back.

It's definitely worth it I'd say, but you might be better waiting for Ivy Bridge.

IB might not be all that much to get excited about, but Panther Point is definitely worth waiting for. PCI-e 3.0 might not seem like a big deal right now, but if this guy's still running a Q6600, he's probably not the type to ditch a platform every tock cycle. Maybe two or three GPU upgrades (say five or six years) down the line he'll probably be thankful for the extra bandwidth provided.

i went from an e7300 @ 3ghz to a 2500k @ 4.6 and the difference in games is massive. Its actually a greater difference then some graphics card updates ive had in the past. ie from a gtx 260 to 460. its especially noticeable in games like shogun 2, where i was able to go from medium/high to maxing everything (worth maxing) with no change in graphics card. and skyrim went from fairly playable, to perfectly smooth maxxed with alot of graphical mods and high res textures etc.

Here's the real question TC are you happy with your current setup? does it perform the way you want? Upgrading from one quad core to another seems like a waste when your current cpu is doing the job just fine. But the performance gains will be dependent on the game, like with Starcraft 2 because of the fact it only utilizes two cores and having a faster architecture will help. Now with a game like BF3 where all quad cores perform nearly the same it wouldn't be a super noticeable upgrade. Personally I would just wait it out until you cant play a certain game because of your CPU. Your Q6600 at 3.6ghz isnt no slouch.

Unlikely going to be a problem (the PCI-E 2.0) while running a single card, only in multi gpu setups

I think it's just a question of whether you think it's worth the money. I can't imagine you'd regret the upgrade (the i5 is a hell of a chip for the money), but if you're still happy with your Q6600 you could alway spend that money elsewhere and/or wait to see how Piledriver and Haswell turn out.

That's probably because 260 to 460 isn't a big jump.

In five or six years? Five or six years ago the 8800GTX was the most powerful card on the market. In another five or six years there will be $100 cards on the market that make the HD 7970 or GTX 680 look positively frumpy.
