Always go back. Divine Divinity, Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Titan Quest, A Farewell to Dragons, Planet Alcatraz. These and others stay installed and get a few hours each here and there in between the big releases as the years go by.

Always looking for the best/most fun of them all. Any suggestions of great ones to try? List your favorites and ones on the horizon that we can look forward to.

...Umbra looks like it will be pretty badass...if it ever comes out

It's really hard to enumerate the best isometric games, there were far too many of those that were absolutely awesome.

My favourites are Divine Divinity, Diablo and Sacred.

I have missed out on many great games in this view angle, but probably my biggest regret is never playing Planescape: Torment.

need to get back to Sacred, that was a cool setup. keep hoping someone will make a good Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain hi-def version. had tried a version couple years ago but just didnt work well. that was an awesome game back before vampires became g ay/twilighted.

like what? I cannot think of many isometric games not on PC. Overhead is not the same as isometric.

I'd have to say games like Syndicate 1 and 2, Ultima 7, Theme Hospital, Crusader No Remorse/Regret, Jagged Alliance 1 and 2. These were true classic isometric games. Maybe can mention Dungeon Keeper in this also...

These are all classic games from before year 2000, i can't recall playing any fun isometric games since then... i hated all the Diablo games and all its clones so I can't count that.

One other game that almost had it right was The Bard's Tale, but they had too much an overhead view and not enough lower angle so it ruined the game not being able to see properly ahead.

I remember Gauntlet Legends on N64 had an isometric view, it was probably the only good gauntlet legends version i played... the others before or later on were worse.

Another recent game I played was The Witcher, it had a good isometric view which had a good angle of everything... just I wouldn't call it good compared to real classics.

How's Titan Quest? I got that in the humble bundle, but I haven't played it yet. I've never played a loot based ARPG before, so I kind of want to see whats the big deal about.

That game is great. Planescape is my favorite so far. Still need to catch up play more of the older ones myself though lol. As for isometric RPGs over the horizon, there is Wasteland 2 and Project Eternity that's being developed by talents like Tim Cain, Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer and a number of other great designers. Numenera is sounding promising as well.

like zelda? lol

and that's not counting the insane amount of JRPGs that use isometric perspective for everything but the combat screen.

Marble Madness; Man, I was totally blown away by that game. Back then, isometric graphics were a novelty...

EDIT: Come to think of it, there was another C64 game that used isometric graphics and was really good, but I can't remember the title. You were a robot that could transform into a plane. Anyone?

EDIT2: Man, google does know everything. I searched for "robot + plane C64" and it spit out the game with ease. It's called Deceptor.

great. one of the better looking and it's just cool being in the middle of the whole ancient mediterranean myths world on earth. after having played so many rpgs in other dimensions\worlds it was surprisingly cool to be back on earth with stories you've grown up hearing. that laura croft & guardian of light was really good too, i need to see if i still have that around. glad you mentioned it 'pekto

But the only isometric games are the CDI ones no? Zelda is overhead, not isometric. Same with most JRPG's. Maybe I am misunderstanding, but isometric games use that angle to make a 2D game feel sorta 3D. Such as Diablo I, Diablo II, Planescape, and more.

No, you're not misundertanding. Isometric graphics give the illusion of being 3D in a 2D environment, just like a painting.

By "isometric" the original Starcraft, XCOM and even games like Sim City and Civ 4 do count. So it could be a more interesting question over just RPGs :P.

someone mentioned Witcher 1. if we are taking games that have an isometric camera view, along with other views, into consideration than i would have to add The Witcher and Dragon Age:Origins to my lists. am actually playing Dragon Age again now for the first time in a couple years and am enjoying it again more than most games that have come out since.

Loki, Drakensang, and Drakensang:River of Time are a few more with that isometric camera option that i really enjoyed.

if you really like Torchlight games and have completed them; the Fate games are Torchlight clones and are decent but fairly immature.

Arcanum. Also Bastion is a great game from the more recent releases.
