Hello everyone,

I recently bought a new PC and I believe I am having problems with the Graphics Card.

It is an Nvidia 8800gt 512mb and whenever I play any game(Have tried multiple games ranging from less graphical to more) all of them have a framerate issue. They will run perfectly fine for 30-40secs averaging about 60fps then it will completly drop the 0-1fps for 1-2 seconds. This issue gets very very annoying and it is almost impossible to play games like this. The Graphics Card is running pretty hot.

I also have 4gb of pc6400 ddr2 800, AMD x2 6400AM2 CPU, and an ASUS M3A 780G EMH Mobo.

I have contacted the retailer and more than likely will be replacing the Graphics card. But, I need to know if it is what is really causing the problems.

Would be great if someone could help me.

Thank you,

Hieshiro

If it were overheating then you would probably start seeing artifacts popping up and maybe some restarts. You can also get speedfan that will record the temp of everything for like 10min so after you get done playing an intense part go and check to make sure it isnt like 85C or higher. You might want to check all your processes and see if you are running alot of background stuff that might be causing the slowdowns.

I just tried swaping the Graphics card over to the Onboard Graphics Card and it doesn't do this. It runs slow becuase the onboard graphics suck. So I am sure it is a Graphics Card issue.

Use rivatuner to bump the fan speed up.There is NOTHING wrong in doing that.8800GT has a really slow default fan speed due to the noise it makes.

It can also slow the PC down especially if mixing memory brand. Try it with 2GB.

Well, I tried taking out 2gig ram(Both are the same make btw) and it didn't appear to make any differance. I did bump up my GPU Fan Speed to 100% and seems to be staying pretty cool at 60C.

I can't seem to figure out what the heck the problem is.

Should I get a 64 bit OS or something, will that help me? I don't understand :(

I am looking into upgrading my 32bit XP to 64bit Vista.

Would be great if someone could confirm that this will help my system. :)

I'm in dire need :D

Mixing memory can slow the PC down and 4GB on Windows XP 32bit can also slow it down. Depending on your Video sub system, this can slow your graphics performance slightly, as some of this memory set aside for the Opterating system is used for your Video cards memory aperature.

What is a safe temperature for a GPU to run at? I have a 8800GTS 512MB G92, and it at 73c right now. This is without running a game, just the internet. Is that too hot? I'm new to PCs.

I'm amazed no one has recommended checking for the latest drivers. That thing's a damn good card, but without the newest drivers, video cards can really be crap. Try it, if you haven't yet, and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I would get it replaced. If THAT doesn't work, I would go pick up another video card. Good luck.

Eh, if you're a gamer, then I would get another fan or 2 in that computer. It would help tremendously and may increase framerate in-game.

What are your room temperatures?

And what are your load temps? That's what matters. If it'a below 85 then you are OK.If it's above that then increase the fan speed of your card through rivatuiner.

Even though your idle temp seem a little unusally high it's still nothing to worry about as long as your load temps are fine.
