Here's all the info you would need.

Budget = 100 pounds

Location = UK

Purpose = Techno and electronic music

Devices that would be used with = iphone and laptop

Because it will be used with an iphone so having decent volume levels is very important. Noise cancellation is not necessary and neither is sound leakage an issue.

Now this wasnt my friends requirement but I would like to recommend him some cheap USB amp/sound card that he can use with his laptop. Dont recommend any iphone accessory, the headphone will be used as it is with the iphone.

And please give UK links for the recommended items as I dont live in UK so cant tell him where to go.

Thank you. :)

my choices would be:

in-ear - Beyerdynamic DTX 101 iE

http://www.alternate.co.uk/beyerdynamic/beyerdynamic+DTX_101_iE/html/product/1037015/?

on-ear - Audio Technica ATH-M50 (a bit over budget @ £118)

https://www.coolshop.co.uk/catalog/product/75844-audio-technica-ath-m50-headphones-black

volume levels depend highly on impedance of the headphones. anything below 60 ohms should be fine for mobile phones. these headphones are 12 ohms and 32 ohms. if the impedance is higher, like couple of hundred ohms, they need an amplifier. hence not suitable for mobile devices.

PCs these days have pretty good soundcards integrated, so it's not necessary to buy external soundcard unless you need some specific inputs/outputs, or if you need to use professional audio software that requires small latency drivers.

e: i have no idea if those online stores are any good. they were just examples i found.

We need on-ear but unfortunately the site you have linked says out of stock and "expected" delivery within 2 weeks. Thats not good enough, I found these on amazon but its 132 pounds which is too expensive so please recommend something else. Just tell me the model if you cant find a UK link I'll look it up myself. :)

Lets keep things simple he isnt someone who would do too much hassle, a 3m cord just wont cut it for portable listening.

Well I'm going to mention Sennheiser HD439 then http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Closed-Back-Headphones-Outstanding-Performance/dp/B005SNPV94/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377984475&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd439. Reasons being that they're very lightweight and come with a quite short (detachable) cable that fits well for portable use, they're comfortable, and the sound is pretty good considering the low price. Everything is quite balanced, the bass is present without being overwhelming, midrange and treble do their job without being harsh or completely recessed.

Thanks that looks good.

I would also like to recommend him a cheap portable amp as I have personally experienced just how much of a massive difference even a cheap amp makes for any half decent headphone. So will this be a good option?

I have a pair of senn HD429 and have the Fiio E6. It gives a noticeable improvement :)

To be honest I don't believe the 439 is much better than the 429 so you could save money (429 are only £55 now). The M50 is worth the extra but of course a budget is a budget.

Both the Senns drop off pretty fast in the highs; the 449 is in your budget and is slightly better but still not great. Shure SRH440 and Sony MDR7506 are both in your budget and offer better performance in the highs but less bass than the senns so if the friend isn't a basshead they're worth a look.

Well recommending 45 pound headphones to someone with a 100 pound budget would be a bit weird. :P

As for the 449 well my research tells me the 439 are actually better for electronic since they have more bass which is very important for that genre. My friend isnt someone to care too deeply about the minor things so I'll think we will just go for the 439 and the E6. :)
