Hello, recently i found myself leaving my computer running for a pretty long time , recently i've left it running for like 3 days , and i am worried it will blow up or fry itself or something, here are the specs...
CPU: Inter core 2 Quad 8400
Mainboard: Gigabyte mainboard
Memory: 3072mb DDR2
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250

I really need to leave my computer on for the night (For stuff like going on Megaman x8, selecting noah's park, and then place a heavy object on the LEFT button to get lots of metals from the metal generator!) and other things, but i can live without that if my computer is in danger.

Yes every minute you leave your computer on over 12 hours increases its chance by 5% to randomly explode.

lol, as the previous two posters have taken care of the funny comments, I'll give you a serious one... I have not turned off my PC for the last 3-4 months, it has yet to implode (or explode for that matter).

So you're saying you've never had any damage? any hardware failure? nothing? and you are saying it is COMPLETELY on? not on sleep mode or anything?

Besides running the components down (which happens any time a pc is on) and as long as everything is in good condition nothing should happen for leaving you computer on for long periods of time.

aside from wasting electricity and running up your bill, there are no dangerous effects. parts may wear out but that's to be expected and adds a neglible difference.

Yes, it's completely on... no sleep mode, I do have the monitor turn off automatically though. I've been leaving my computer on pretty much non-stop with the occasional reboot or a day or two of downtime for the past 5 or 6 years, it's fine...

My computer hasn't been off since I went on vacation about 4 months ago.

Well, if I leave mine on for a long time, it starts to heat up real bad... I probably just need to clean all of the dust out of it

I think the only real problem that could happan is that a fan might die from being on all the time... But like other people said, PCs can be left on for long times. But i would advise you check how much it heats up, because if your case has bad airflow it might overheat the sytstem (the fans just circulating hot air inside the case).

It should be fine though you run the risk of it becoming sentient and murdering you in your sleep.

I left my PC on for 6 months straight, only powering it down when I left for more than a day.

Apart from the obvious wear to parts your computer should not blow up. However I thought leaving computers on for long periods of time can cause the OS to become more unstable. Something about reacurring errors piling up...

Why would you not turn your PC off, unless your downloading something really big its just wasteful.

I'm always downloading or uploading data to other users, I host many games on my PC so it is like a server. It's been working non stop for 3 years now and it has never failed....electricity is cheap here anyways :P

We've got servers at work that have been running for 15+ years with a couple of reboots a year max. Personally I think it's better to just leave your computer on if you use it everyday. Consistent power cycles wear down components. Buy a good PSU and you'll have no problems. Antec or die. Oh, and the guy above talking about the OS becoming more unstable: yeah, that's pretty much only with Windows OS's. Unix based operating systems can stay up for incredible amounts of time without any problems. Win Server 2003 has some good up times as well. Not sure how well Win 7 can handle it, but we'll see.

I'm pretty sure if your computer can last long enough to install a game like World of Warcraft, it will still be chugging along long past the last mammal draws its last breath.

If servers can take a beating in tight racks than Im sure yours can with a ventilated system. Thats the best comparison I can think of.

Not really but its never a good idea to leave it on 24/7 I always turn my PC off before going to bed or going out into town.
