So I'm going to build a pc gaming and I wanted to get the GTX 1070 but I don't want to waste much money.

My question is if I get the GTX 970 can I play the upcoming games for 4-5 years even if is on medium graphics or should I get the GTX 1070?

1070 if you really want it to last for a long time or get the rx 480 for $200 then another card 2-3 years down the road.

What do you think Bikouchu gave you?

For something that you want to last 4-5 years you need to go 1070.

1070 for sure. 970 has already been out almost 2 years. 1070 is a much better card and way more future proof. Also, 4-5 years is a long time. You will probably want to upgrade during that time as you will be used to maxing games with the 1070 and I personally find it hard to lower too many settings. The card will last, but will you want to keep it that long? ;)

If your concern is future proofing, then you should get the 1070. Honestly I can't think of any good reason to get a 900 series any more unless you find a really really really good deal. Even if the 1000 series equivalent is more expensive, it'd be worth the jump.

Just looked at the prices; looks like the 1070 runs ~150 USD more expensive than the 970; still worth it imo, though that is pushing it. I mean is there absolutely no way you can afford 450+tax? Then maybe save for another month, or wait another month as I think AMD is coming out with another card.

What are the other components of your PC? You might be able to cut costs in certain areas.

Wait a bit for AMDs cards, if these are really that good as PR likes to claim, nvidia will have to cut the prices even on 1070/1080.

rx480 is most likely cheaper and faster than 970, so either get that or 1070

Last days we had some leaked images from Sapphire.

So Sapphire's RX480 scores 11893 in Fire Strike which is similar to Sapphire's R9 390 (11843):

So, GTX1070/GTX1080 prices will not be affected by this. Actually, Fury models will still be faster and probably R9 390X too.

Vega on the other hand, is an other story...

1070 for sure. I love my 970, but the price difference seems well worth it for the 1070 - it's not like 970s are going for only $200 or something.

GTX 970 for 2 years of 1080p 60FPS gaming at most. GTX 1070 for more than 60FPS, and lasting more than 2 years.

Get the 1070 absolutely for sure, it comes with 8GB of VRAM as opposed to the weird 3.5GB/4GB VRAM setup of the 970 , 1070 is quite a bit faster then the 970 as well. Go for the 1070 no doubt.

1070 if you want a good 4 years to run on it. As long as you stay at 1080p gaming

I had the same question, the GTX 970 is on sale at best buy for $279 and more in my price range, I only play games at 1080p, havent made the jump to 4k yet. I would like the 1070, but anyways as of now they're so hard to track down and cost just under $500. Would the 970 get me by for now? since I'm not doing 4k gaming or anything?
