You know, I've been doin some research (google) and it turns out the best RPG's are the ones that feature powers that technicaly aren't magic, but work the same way, for example The Mass Effect technology in Mass Effect, or Genetic/cybernetic mutation/enhancements like Bioshock/Deux Ex. Keep clear of Elders Scroll, Dragon Age and Dungeons and Dragons.

You know... I don't even use magic in the Elder Scrolls series. See that's the nice thing about those games. You don't have to use it.

I sample every last ounce of the games I play.

anyway Magic isn't available in other genres so thats why I brough it up. There was an article discussed the implifications of the Mass Effect 3 Stats, showing more than 50 or 60 percent of people played the game as male shepard as a Soldier, I mean, don't we have TPS like Gears for that ? I mean they should have that option but its quite sad when alot of people use their freedom of choice to stay within their comfort zones. I'm actualy a hipacrite because I did a simular thing with GRID 2, I refused to by the game because it didn't have cockpit cam, despite never using or liking the cockpit camera before in my life. But I wanted it there, think of it like a Rape Counter Measure (a whistle, or pepper spray), you hope never need to use it, but you want it there.

Yea, pretty much.   With all these kickstarters coming out soon, I almost forgot about the grim face of mainstream rpgs.

New Vegas and Dark Souls were good as far as modern stuff goes, but yea, you can keep the rest.

Edit: I guess the Twitcher series isn't atrocious either.

With Skyre and a billion other mods that take the console out of it, Skyrim can be good.

As someone who's a fan of action RPGs and Obsidian I can tell you that it's not very good at all. Not offensively bad, but I really can't think of any element of the game that was impressive. On topic, depends on what you're into. New Vegas had great roleplaying elements and world. Dragon's Dogma has really good combat and a great sense of adventure in the exploration. Dark Souls has some of the best art direction and combat. Skyrim is highly customizable, and in my opinion is great with the right mods. Try the requiem mod if you're looking for good RPG elements.

I love how half the games mentioned here are not modern at all, and how the other half are barely considered RPGs.

Not completely "modern" but risen is alright, dunno about risen 2 as I haven't played it yet. Again, not "modern" but gothic is apparently good. Otherwise, I'm in the same boat.
