Well GTX 970 is generally a better GPU.

That means more performance, lower noise, lower temps, and lower power consumption.

Its pretty clear that GTX970 is a superior GPU.

But if the difference is big, like $100 (lets say $350vs$250), I would give R9 290 a second thought.

ps: In the image I have a pic of the last GTX970 techpowerUP reviewed.

I would go for GTX970 without any 2nd thought.

I am waiting for similar prices here in Greece, but at the moment GTX970 selling like hot cakes and the stores are benefit from that raising the price to 400 euro. %^#%^&$$%^! (Not to mention the speed of some GTX970 status from "available" to "out of stock" is unbelievable for such a high priced card.)

ps: Which one of these cards is the one you want to buy? MSI GTX970

The more money you pay, the better the performance, it's obvious; so if you have the money for 970 go ahead,

The Sapphire TRI-X R9 290 4GB OC is one of the best R9 290 out there.

Before GTX 970 arrives this was a great buy even at 400 euro.

But the enemy of the good, is the better...

No one said it's not a great GPU, but GTX970 costs more also gives you about 5-10% better performance, lower TDP and it's running cooler - if all of these worth the extra 55 euros to you, then go ahead and pick it up
