In the Consoles world you got an online identity(XBOX Live,PSN)

and one identity for all games

in PC you have a different name for every one(or more) game(s)

example:

"heY Dude gimme ya XBoX Live n4me so we can play GaMeZ 2gather"

soooo what does he want??

obvious he wants your Xbox live name

but in PC....

"hey what's your...humm...P...C...name?"

what does he want??

maybe your e-mail

oh maybe MSN

or ICQ

or Skype

or Xfire

or AIM

or IRC

ooooohhhhh now i get it maybe its the service name...

ummm GFWL?

maybe Steam...

D2D - Direct to Drive?

Impluse?

or based on the company that made the game....

EA name?

maybe UBI(soft) name

Blizzard Account?

GameSpyID?

Ventrilo?

TeamSpeak?

DAMN! this is really annoying

Don't you think there sould be one service or definitive way for PC gamers to virtually connect with eachother

I do...and you?

I like how diverse PC gaming is...so I'm quite satisfied with the way things are.

OnLive?

Just kidding, I always wanted something big and unified but I guess that won't happen at all.

PC Gamers don't ask "what's your PC name". They ask "are you using Xfire/Steam/Skype/Hamachi?".

No, that would be extremely annoying and limited. You can't have a good "online" service for your game if you don't design it specificaly for it.

If you find this "complexity" annoying, well, most of us PC gamers find the simplicity of a system like Live or a matchmaking system, annoying.

Also, most PC gamers don't care about stats or achievements "OMG give me your PSN/XBL/etc ID so that I can watch how awesome you are and how many points you have" and if you're really playing a certain game with your friends, it's extremely easy to join them, I don't see why you consider it so hard.

no no and no. Why would you want a monopoly, whent he competition is what makes pc service better? For example, steam vs impulse vs gamersgate. If steam was alone sitting on it's pile of cash, Valve would become lazy and stop to innovate, force us to watch publicity, overprice the game (in the us ;) ). Imagine if M$ gfwl was the only pc gaming program to buy and play game online. Paying 50$ a year and watching pub is fun for you?

As long as PC is a open platform it would never happen, And I'd Rather it stay like that.

yes...kinda but...BUUUT....keep the rifles down ppl :D. but it shouldnt be one service..just one login. if someone could create a web service or piece of software that would log u in to other services like steam and team speak and such like....i think that would be a great idea (without compromising security of course). u could just share that ID with other users and they would know what ure up to. ive heard of a few sites that do something similar for social networking sites. of course, as mentioned above, security would be a very big issue with it. however the idea of one service...like just steam or just GFWL....thats completly unacceptable.

just keep your username the same for everything then. Voila.

edit : you talk about a one-login thing... try pidgin, you can use your msn, aim, gmail talk (and a bunch more) buddy lists all at the same time.

Not only that, but not being force to one online system is one of the greatest pleasures of an open platform. It's like the government having total control over everything you can do. And if you read my sig, I am anti socialist/big government so I am very against TC's idea.

Microsoft tried to do it with Halo2/Gears/Shadowrun. It was boycotted and all those games failed on PC because of it :D

We have services like that already with far better policies that any Xbox/Playstation online service. Steam for example. Its free and people like Valve encourage things like free DLC. Buy a map? a gun? Get fu...

it's a strength and a weakness, Strength because competition brings innovation and enhancements much faster than monopolies do. Weakness because you need all the services and you don't have that uniformity or a really strong anti piracy system. I think just leave it as is, as long as no more additional services come in I don't think it's too bad.

Heard of Xfire? That's a good fallback point to keep your gaming contacts and record your gaming hours. Then I use steam for all of my steam games. I would hate to have a single mandatory "PC name" however unrealistic it is. Stick to console gaming if you feel that way.

It's bad enough that PC owners have to endure things such as SecuRom DRM on some games. The last thing we need is a single provider monopolizing online service. Competition makes it better.

Hell no.. Having a single service breeds stagnation.. Multiple services breed innovation.. Not to mention options and customization.. Services like XBL is nice, but I must certainly woudl not want its strict system as the only mode of multiplayer.
