I guess it depends of what exactly is meant by 'depth'. There are some hardcore military strategy and simulation games out there that take a lot of time and effort to learn and master. The Hearts of Iron series comes to mind.

Nah when I say "deep" I mean a storyline that's both complex and compelling. Something that draws you in and really makes you think you're there.

Both Max Payne games were released on PC before any other platform. Maybe the sotry in those games was fairly deep, but calling it the deepest game would be a huge stretch.

Story? I think Homeworld. But I haven't played Planescape: Torment, which would probably get the award from me if I did.

Regardless what the haters/fanboys think, the first one was pretty awesome. I haven't played either of the other ones.

I also think you have to throw in the HL2 series. I agree with Baldurs Gate and you could probably argue for Vampire the masquerade bloodlines.

No modern game can hold a candle to the depth of the storytelling found in Infocom's best games. Trinity, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Starcross are good examples of their mastery of the art.

Homeworld.

NO game got me more emotionally involved than that.

Halflife: Episode 2 came a close second with ALyx dying, being resurected, then Eli Vance dying.

Deepest story? Probably I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.

Deepest in terms of complexity? Dangerous Waters or Empires In Arms.

You really had me scratching my head to pick the right game, until you said this:

Nah when I say "deep" I mean a storyline that's both complex and compelling. Something that draws you in and really makes you think you're there.Zythyl

Now, it's the simplest question ever. The answer is Planescape: Torment, plain and simple. Sorry, there's no room for discussion or arguments here.

I hereby declare this thread to be over.

The universe is actually quite deep, if you look further than what you see on a single play through.
Granted, this topic is deepest game not deepest game universe, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Oblivion has so little voice actors that the immersion is lost.

Even though I probably wouldn't pick it normally, I'll pick Halo: Combat Evolved out of spite towards those haters who insist that its a crappy game and a lame story. It's one of the best video game stories *ever* and the universe is very well thought out - deep, as the thread title asks.

Also, is it really that hard to have proper grammar and spelling? It's not too little voice actors, its "too few" voice acters. A quantity uses more or fewer, a magnitude uses little and much.

Why? It is true what he says. Halo does take place in a deep and well thought out universe with a good and interesting story. That's obviously my opinion, but I don't really think anyone can deny that the universe is well thought out.
