I just bought and installed Call of Duty 4 earlier today on my PC. After playing through a few of the single player missions, I decided to test the multiplayer to see if it was all it cracked up to be.

However, the moment I opened the multiplayer section of the game it crashed (it didn't even reach the title screen!). It then gave me the message "iw3mp.exe has stopped working". I tried running the game in safe mode: no dice.

Please help! :'(

If you're running Vista, try running it in compatibiliy mode with XP SP2. If that doesn't work, you can try running as administrator. If THAT doesn't work, I have no idea.

I have also had this problem with other games, the best example being Splinter Cell Double Agent. The single player works without a hitch, but the multiplayer crashes before it can even reach the menu. Could my computer be improperly installing games?

If you don't want to be plugging your mic all the time, you can also try going to the sound icon and right click, then click on playback devices. once you get the new window click on the tab that says recording, then right click on stereo mix and click on enable.( If you don't see stereo mix, right click on the empty white space and click show disabled devices)

If it was like this for everyone who owned tf2, there would be about 500 people.

I found I had the same issue with the onboard sound and COD4 in multiplayer. The issue is well known on the COD4 tech boards.

I took the long-term a bit more expensive route, and bought a Soundblaster X-Fi Platnum, and my problem immediately went away.
