Im not exactly a techie, but my rig is an old P4 3.2ghz ( i think), 512 ram and ati x1300. i was able to run the game and finish it. though i had to put everything to low. what i did was to update my driver for my video card and update my directx. after that everything went sweet. Btw, the game is great. hope this helps and hope you will enjoy the game as much as i did.

If you updated your drivers to latest then you shouldnt have a problem there, also I dont think its your game thats buggy, must be a Vista issue then try to play it on XP if you got another PC

Hate to say it, but it's not Bioshock that's buggy. It runs perfect on the XP tower in my sig, but I had the same problem on the Vista Notebook in my sig. Vista is what's buggy.

4 gb of ram. sheshpete_merlin

That can cause problems especially with x86. It played fine for me with Windows Vista and did not encounter a single problem.

This sounds like a memory problem. Take a stick out see what happens. Are they all the same brand? Depending on your motherboard 4GB can cause a lot of problems and you are using the X86 so what is the point of 4GB?
