I have the money for either one but I am torn between the two, I see the differences between the two but I'm not as PC savvy as I once was to tell if theyre minimal or if the $100 price difference is worth it for the ASUS....The MSI has only 1TB HD as opposed to 1.5TB, no Blu Ray drive (which I don't REALLY need), and same video card but with 1.5Gb of ram instead of 3....but it has 16GB of Ram whereas the ASUS has only 12Gb, which im told is no big deal. So whats your guys expert opinion? Oh and a personal note I think the MSI looks cooler lol.

ASUS

Quad Core i7 2630QM

17.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Display
12GB DDR3 Memory
1.5TB (750GB 7200RPM x 2) Hard Drive
Blu-Ray DVD Combo Drive
NVIDIA GTX 560M 3GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

MSI

Quad Core i7 2630QM
16GB (4GB x 4) DDR3 1333MHz RAM
1TB (2x 500GB 7200RPM) RAID-0 HD

17.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Display

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 VGA

More vid memory isnt going to give you a performance gain for a 560m. Only thing to pay attention to is the bus bandwidth. On some Asus models(G53SX and G74 bestbuy model) will have a 2gb 560m, but it only has a 128bit bandwidth which equals 40gb total. The 1.5gb and 3gb 560m's will have a 192bit bus for a total of 60gb bandwidth, a very big jump, especially if your gaming at 1080p. Anyways, besides that, the MSI 780 has some really loud, but clear speakers, as well as you are able to change the keyboard light color. Downside is that is only has 1 fan for the CPU/GPU, thus it will be much louder than the G74 when it is in game/has load. However, from some of the test I've seen, the temps are as good, if not better than the G74, so it will all come down to noise lvl and just the fact that 1 fan has to work harder than the 2 the G74 has, thus could be more likely to failure. If you don't need 16gb, you certainly won't notice a difference between 12 and 16. So it all comes down to needs, personally I would stick with the G74, only because I like quiet machines, it has 2 fans, and simply because I'm more comfortable with Asus. Another bonus for the 780 is that it does offer hardware raid, where as Asus gaming laptops still do NOT offer it.

I wouldnt get either, Id get this laptop instead. CPU is an AMD quad core, weaker than the core i7, but the graphics is crossfired 6750 with a 6660. Probably better graphics performance than either of the laptops you linked. Costs $700. The money saved I would spend on a decent desktop.

HP pavilion Laptops are notorious for failing though, especially their motherboards, I can't even count how many of them I have seen go to hell after a short period of time.

While I agree it could happen to any brand, HP seems to have a higher rate of failure with their laptops.
