I recently got interested in flight simulators when I played a chopper sim at my friends house. What are the most immersive, engaging, fun flight sims on the pc? Preferebly newer ones.

Thanks in advance!

I have played plenty of Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

I your PC can run it, I recommend it.

The good part is that you can customize realism, collisions, etc, and there's a modding community.

It's beginner-friendly too.

Depends on the kind of sim you want? For IWW I would recommnend Rise of Flight, for modern sim get A10 Warthog, for heli sim Black Shark 2.

If you want civilian flights then the choice is between Flight Simulator X and Take on Helicopters.

I'm not picky, but I'd like a story or objective driven kind of sim. The period doesn't really matter.

Flight Simulator X will set you right. It needs a pretty hefty machine to run well though...

I've never seen a flight sim with dramatics. The closest would be a dynamic campaign based on historical events. But, if it's anything like an Ace Combat-type story, nope. I've never seen one. For a flight sim, I rather not see one. A dynamic campaign is enough.

If you want World War 2 IL-Sturmovik: 1946 is probably your best bet. It has a sequel IL2: Cliffs of Dover but its horribly optimized, buggy, and everyone's just waiting for it to be fixed. Other than that like others said:

DCS: A-10
DCS: Black Shark
FSX
Take on Helicopters
X-Plane 9
Wings of Prey is a good arcadey alternative to IL-2

Thers an upcoming flight sim from microsoft "Microsoft Flight" (not sure hows the development going)

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/

Don't waste ur time on fsx, i gave up, optimization is so poor... you'd better try out fs2004 with good addons, like pmdgs aircrafts

FSX, X-Plane, DCS Black Shark, DCS A-10C and Falcon 4 BMS 4.32 are all good sims, but you need to know some things. In terms of aerodynamic accuracy, nothing beath Black Shark and A-10C, or even gets close to them, because they are sims that let you fly a single aircraft, with extremely high fidelity. So high, the US army uses A-10C to train drone pilots. Heck, it was DEVELOPED for the army. BMS 4.32 focuses on the F-16 block 50, but it's a mod based on a 1998 game, so don't except modern graphics or physics. It's still the best F-16 sim out there though, and it's the only one where you'd get into awesome dogfights. :) So if you wanna focus your efforts on a single aircraft, get BS or A-10c (both meant for ground attacks), or BMS 4.32 for air combat.

DCS A-10C is the most detailed immersive sim ever. Just be ready to dedicate a good 10 hours to just learning basic systems

I completely agree with this post. iL2 kind of tells a story (it's of the Eastern Front) as you complete missions in a dynamic campaign though with the add-ons being included with 1946, it also takes you to the PTO to fight the Japanese too.

FSX (if you have a really good PC) has many tweaks to get it to run and look good along with more and more new freeware and payware scenery and aircraft (PMDG recently released their long awaited 737NGX and fans were drooling over it for a long time). If you do not have a decent PC, FS 2004 still has a lot of new payware and freeware mods released for it as well as tons of previously released stuff still available. AVSIM is a place to visit for MSFS mods and forums.

I don't know how much of a "flight sim" this is, but Battlefield 3 and previous iterations have really fun chopper flying. I can't say much for the plane though as I suck completely at maneuvering a plane in these games.

Yeah, flying the Apache and Havoc on Bad Company 2 is fun, but it absolutely isn't a simulation.

The only heavily story driven one I can think of is the Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. series, but bear in mind that "sim" in this case is use very loosely. It's an arcade flight sim with highly unrealistic gameplay mechanics. You can carry ridiculous amounts of missiles, and the mission scenarios are the stuff of near future sci-fi techno thrillers. That's not to say that it's not a fun game if you like that kind of thing, but don't expect a realistic / authentic experience.

FSX would be my choice. The mods/xpacs available allow you to really steer the experience any way you wish to go.

BTW, has there ever been further info about Microsoft Flight?

There is a new game that just came out that I am sure you will love. It is a flight simulator WWII style ace combat type of game. It is brand new. Came out July 19th IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover You can find it on STEAM

The only other alternative is X-Plane 9. X-Plane 9 looks good in some areas. Unfortunately, most airports are barren (no buildings at all) and the clouds are crap.
