It's not as clear cut as people would like you to believe, sure the FX series are power hogs but software is moving towards more and more multithreading and plenty of benchmarks shown have the 8 core piledrives competing very well with Ivy Bridge i7's at a much cheaper price when that is factored in. Sure IPC isn't as strong, but it will still compete with mid level i5's in games that only use a few cores. I think as time goes on (esp. with the newer consoles) you will see the FX pull away.
You honestly can't go wrong with either setup, but yes the i5 is more "efficient" and overall better balanced for todays stuff.
i5 4670K no doubt about it (FX 8350 can't even beat a i7 920 from 2008 clock for clock).
FX 8350 actually isn't a bad CPU but its a lot slower clock for clock and a lot of benchmarks that show the 8350 close to the i5 series are benchmarks in which the FX is clocked significantly higher
It technically has more threads but its not going to pull away from the raw horsepower of an i5 4670K since the gap in raw power is too high (especially if you overclock the 4670K).

That is not true at all, again go look at almost anything multithreaded that uses more then 4 cores, and the FX 83xx has no issues beating i5's and will match i7's.
Crysis 3 and BF4 are very good examples of the type of multithreading games are starting towards and the FX's do very well in those games. The 4670K no doubt kicks it in the teeth per clock, but the FX was designed for something different in mind.
The FX's can be as slow as I3's and as fast as IB i7's, it depends on the software. The 4670K is more consistent however, has lower power consumption and is a hell of a gaming CPU.
