Hey guys need help deciding on new laptop... I can get the alienware 15 with i7, 8gb, 980m and 256gb ssd +1tb hdd with 1080p screen for $1980... Or i can get the lenovo y50 with i7 44700hq, 860m, 8gb ssd+ 1tb hdd also 1080p for $900. Should i go all out and get the alienware or should i jus settle for the lenovo for a couple yrs... I know ill max out all the games with alienware but will have to settle for medium high settings on lenovo... Question is which. Would yall choose fellow gamers?

I'd say no to alien ware I'm sure there are equivalent models from others for cheaper. But here is why you shouldn't go with a Lenovo Link.

If nothing else is available not much you can do but go with it. The big reason I don't recommend alienware is because it's a Dell product. The brand tends to be overpriced, while not offering much in the line of quality improvement over cheaper models. Dells customer service is also one of the worst, so if anything goes wrong expect a hassle, or shitty refurbished units.

For what it's worth, it's not difficult to manually remove the spyware, and Lenovo has since posted a tool for removing it and the code for the tool was made public so you can see that the tool itself is not sketchy. The incident is definitely a black eye for Lenovo, but if you like the hardware and the price (not commenting on that myself here), the software issue is not a serious hurdle.

My experience with Dell customer service has been nothing but excellent. Thought I had a faulty DVD drive, someone shows up a few days later and replaces it...

@horgen: Probably MSI or ASUS.

Between Alienware and Lenovo..... Tough call. I prefer the superior cooling system of the Alienware. But, its price counteracts that advantage. I like the spec sheet and price of the Lenovo Y50. But, its conventional (business) layout is worrisome (overheating), especially if I push the CPU and GPU.

Hence, a middle ground between the two.

MSI, ASUS, heck even Acer's gaming laptops have nice build quality.

I have a lenovo gaming laptop. It will be the last product I buy from them. The build quality is horrendous. Tons of issues with the hard drive. Horrible customer service.

I'll look around the web see what I can find, I'll post back anything half decent by the end of the night. And like another said the lenovo's fish issue can be resolved no problem. Not like you can't just reinstall windows and get rid of all the bloat ware all together.

I'd say no to both, alienware is just a ripoff, and lenovo is now under fire for security breaches installed on their laptops

@rogelio22: If your looking for a laptop, you might checkout Ibuypower.com

I was looking around a couple weeks ago and noticed they had a pretty decent selection for right around $1000.

The big thing your looking for in a laptop, if your going to do any gaming, is a dedicated graphics card. If you buy something that has "good specs" but is using intergrated graphics than you will be in for a let down if you try and game on it.

I have a preference for gaming laptops with cooling systems designed for gaming. ASUS and MSI come to mind although I'd still check those two (as well as other brands) and make sure they have custom designed cooling systems.

I like the custom cooling fans and vents (one for CPU, another for GPU) of my ASUS G46VW.

If I were to buy a gaming laptop today, I'd consider other boutique brands such as CyberPowerPC.

ZeusBook Edge X6 100

Guru3D review

For $1089 (plus shipping and tax):

  • 15.6" 1080p, IPS screen
  • i7-4710Q 2.5 Ghz (turbo: 3.5 Ghz), HM87 Express chipset
  • 6 Gb GTX 870m
  • 8 Gb DDR3 1600 RAM
  • 1 Tb, 7200 rpm SATA300 HDD
  • Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi abcgn, Bluetooth, 4-in-1 flash reader, backlit keyboard, HD webcam
  • Windows 8.1

An optical drive (internal or external) is extra. But, nowadays, how often do you use one?

I also like the custom (Supra-Cool) cooling system.

Are you seriously choosing between 900$ laptop and a 2000$ one? of course the Alienware is better because of the GPU nothing more.

Try finding something in between like a laptop from Asus or MSI for 1500$.

@PredatorRules: they have some good looking ones but seem to be underpowered like having an 870m or something. And the powerful ones jus look too bulky and are priced about the same as the alienware... And yeah the biggest i want is 15". the 17" looks to big to carry around
