Doom, Quake, Half Life, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, StarCraft, Total Annihilation, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Max Payne, Grim Fandango, whatever Monkey Island game is the best and a ton of other games that I don't even know about.foxhound_fox
I'm out. and it's Monkey Island II.

No way, It's Curse of Monkey Island. Everytime I think of it, It feels like im talking about a dead relative.
I want to get all self-righteous about all the games I love and how everyone should have played them to earn my recognition, but the truth is I don't think a 'true' PC gamer needs to have played any games.
PC gaming is, to me, a way of life... it's not some badge of superiority to be paraded around on your sleeve, and I wouldn't take someone less seriously just because they haven't played a couple games in a genre they may hate.
But if I were to answer this question, just hypothetically, I'd probably have Doom, System Shock 2, Half Life, Escape from Butcher Bay, Fallout, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, EverQuest, Civilization 2, Dawn of War and Riven in there.
But I know some people I have a great deal of respect for who have never played those games, so take that for whatever it's worth.
PC gaming is, to me, a way of life...

This made me laugh.
Some of the games mentioned here are simply too old for most of us to have played. The original Doom? I have to play it on the PC because...? Sorry, but that is well before my time. I agree with some of the other suggestions made in this thread though. System Shock 2 and the Half-Life series are must-plays for anyone who enjoys a good story.
While Doom is a relic worth playing for the nostalgia factor, System Shock 2, the Lucas adventure games, and the Half-Life series are excellent games worth playing simply for the unrivaled experience they offer.

Why's that funny?
On Doom, I don't agree. I think it's worth playing for far more than nostalgic value. Get a mouselook mod and pump it up to ultraviolence and you're gonna get an experience like no other. Hardcore crazy action that no game can equal. games like Painkiller and Serious Sam and Starship Troopers tried, but nothing comes close. Doom is also readily available through a boxed Collector's Edition or through Steam.
I still play it today, and nostalgia has nothing to do with it. It's the best at what it does.
doom. plain and simple.fireandcloud
I hate that game, lol. Gave me nightmares as a kid (I played it when I was about 5). Don't really like Deus Ex that much either. Don't like the shooting. Here is my list:
Mafia, Max Payne, Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis, Half Life, Counter Strike, etc. Company of Heroes is now one of my favorite games of all time so I guess that is one also.

lol, thanks. I remember these guys on doom that were like brown and threw like fireballs at you, and I also remember these flying flaming skulls and those were the ones in my nightmares. I remember them chasing me, lol. I really liked the shotgun in that game also.

space pizza.
Its a game about flying around in a giant pizza in space delivering pizzas to houses floating in space all while shooting hostile aliens with pizza who happened to look like the heads of clowns.
It was published by a company called ideas from the deep in 1993 and it is the most totally awesome elite computer game ever!

That has to be the most overrated game on these boards. It's not really that good. The shooting isn't much fun, the only thing I like about the game is every thing you do changes something and also how big the levels are. I remember I killed this civilian and the next mission debriefing this dude was like, next time don't kill any civilizians.
kings quest series, anything from commodore 64, ummmm, zork series, wolfenstien, team fortress, age of empires, total annihilation, warcraft, c&c, diablo, x-com:ufo defense.
That's just to name a few, I feel that if you enjoyed playing a game then it should be on your list, I don't much believe in the whole you have to have played that game to be a true pc gamer.
I don't think one should have to play a certain game to be given the right to be called "A true PC Gamer". For example, most of the games here listed I have indeed played, most of them I own. I don't, however, own Fallout, nor have I ever played it. Does this derank me as a PC Gamer despite the fact I have been gaming since around 1994 and have played most of the PC games thrown around the industry?
I do however think, there are a number of games that define the PC genre, and one is not in the position to criticise the PC industry until playing them. Obviously Half Life and its sequel, Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft are all must plays. Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem are the classic FPSs that have defined the FPS genre for all platforms. I also think Monkey Island and Myst are the important adventure games of the past, and should not go forgotten.

any game can be overrated it's only how you look at it that determines that it is, but Deus Ex is a really good game. The shooting is indeed flawed untill the later levels when you've upgraded your skills and it may be it's only downside, but luckily enough most people who loved Deus Ex were hardly shooting anyway.
The thing that makes Deus Ex so great is that you have various choices on how to complete every mission even in the end you get to chose between 3 endings and all your actions are long remembered after they occurred.
I am surprised no one mentioned the Commandos series or Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive. It's a pity that you don't get games like those anymore.
Ok, so here is a list of games that you should play. A few notable names are missing here, but that's because I haven't played them.
1. Tomb Raider
2. Half-Life
3. Half-Life 2
4. Doom 3
5. Quake 3 Arena
6. Deus Ex
7. Commandos 2
8. Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive
9. Prince of Persia Sands of Time
10. Max Payne
11. No One Lives Forever
12. No One Lives Forever 2
13. Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast
14. Diablo
15. Portal
16. Age of Empires series
17. Unreal Tournament 2004
Those are the best games that I can think of.
