I can play most modern day games without a hitch on my Vista Home Premium 64-bit install. For older titles it's always good to have a copy of XP lying around (or Windows 7, as I hear it'll have support for legacy games).
Most games run just fine in vista-64. There are two important things to note first :
1. Vista-64 needs more memory to be affective. If you have 4GB or less then 64-bit is not as good as 32-bit on the same machine, because 64-bit has a larger foot print.
2. You need to make sure your drivers are up to date. 64-bit drivers are often farther behind the 32-bit drivers.
Vista-64 and 32 have the same software support, except that 64-bit can't use 16-bit apps...which you shouldn't be seeing unless your playing really old games with support software.

Absolutely. I am using Windows Vista 64-bit and I am liking it. I've had no problems with games so far. Of course, I have not tried very old games, but for that I have my laptop anyway.

I've been on 64 bit Vista for about a year, and the only games I haven't been able to get to work are Jedi Knight(16 bit installer doesn't work on a 64 bit system) and System Shock 2 (and I think there's a fix for that). Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines requires a fix if you have more than 2 GB of RAM, but that's got nothing to do with the OS, and everything to do with poor coding.
So yeah, unless you're trying to play really old games that use 16-bit code, the vast majority of games should run fine.

Yes it works just fine. Depends on the games you are playing, the only 32 bit software that doesn't work on a 64 bit OS are a few applications, games rarely have problems running, games like SW KotOR 1/2, but even those work with some fixes. Almost all games should work if they are 32, so the problem is either you (the settings you messed with/viruses you have) or you are EXTREMELY unlucky and you play all the games that don't work on Vista and some new ones that people never knew they have problems on Vista. If you play 8/16bit games then yeah they don't work.
Thats why I dual boot with Windows 7 ( 64 bit version ) and XP SP3..even though it's still a beta...it rocks and lots of games are backward compatiable! It runs better then Vista in all games and even better then XP in some.
I am definetly buying Windows 7 when it comes out...best OS ever !
Why is it that all games can only run on Vista 32-bit? I have a 64-bit and I can't play jack **** for games which sucks balls. Discuss.

I recently got a new pc and decided to go with 64-bit vista so the thread title got my attention; yet once inside, just a handful of games are mentioned (not even by you and most apparently have fixes) and I see nothing of the issues you are facing. So, is this just a lazy attempt at a vista-hate-thread or can I ask; what games are you referring to and what problems are you encountering?
I built my current rig in Q3'2008. E8400 and HD4850 with 4gigs RAM. I have put Vista Ultimate x64 edition. I didn't face a single crash in old games (released in the range of 1998-2007). But few 2008+ games gave much pain in the ass. Namely Crysis, Dead Space hasve crashed every now and then. Other than that it's fine.
I've had next to no problems running any game on Vista x64. For the (very) few that do give me a pain, I have XP installed. Just for the record - even games as old as Sanitarium run flawlessly.
everything I've tried so far has worked fine, but if I do have a problem I still have my XP install discs so will just slap that onto a partition and dual boot
The only game I remember having problems with is the 64bit version of UT2004, oddly enough. In general I find Vista 64 has no problems running any game I've thrown at it. That being said I don't think I've tried to get any games that don't use older versions of DX. I could see games that are madefor versions of DX before 8 having issues, but that is more a DX thing than a 64bit thing.
The only games I can't really run under Vista Ultimate x64 are all old games that have issues with the following: -Not being able to run 16-bit code -Having fits with the fact that the OS isn't Win9x (2000 and XP also have issues here, but workarounds have usually been made by now) -Having fits with the new hardware and drivers for that new hardware (in particular, graphics drivers for DX10 cards seem to break certain old games) New games, though? Not a problem at all, really.

That's good news about Windows 7, if it's true. I'm using Vista, but only the 32-bit version. I could run the 64-bit, but there is so much software I own that is incompatible with the 64-bit. I have good old XP running on my older pc for the older games.
I have been using the 64 bit version of Vista Home Premium for about a month now. Out of all of my recent games, I've only had an issue with one of them, and that was Age of Empires 3. I eventually was able to get that to work. For my older stuff, I just pop up my virtual machine of Windows XP to play them. The biggest problem is with "semi" old games that don't cooperate with Vista. The best example of this is Serious Sam series minus Serious Sam 2. They require a 3d accelerator card, so I can't run them with Microsoft Virtual Machine, but they are incompatible with Vista.
So, yeah. I don't really have that many problems with 64 bit Vista. With a bit of computer logic, you can get it to run most modern day stuff, and you can always dual boot or use a virtual machine to run really old stuff.

Not to toot the Linux horn here, but Wine can run a lot of the old windows games on any machine--even 16bit ones from win3.1. You also don't have to worry about installing an ancient version of DirectX and destroying your system :P.
Also, don't forget about DOSBox. A lot of Windows 95 games were DOS Games in disguise, like HOMM2, Tomb Raider, Rayman, etc. DOSBox runs on anything--even cell phones.

Half Life does work through steam. If you already have an old copy you don't need to buy a new one as you can simply register it to your steam account through the "activate a product on steam" option.
I have a Vista 64-bit machine and I have no real problems, the only games where I encountered issues is with Vampire: Bloodlines and FEAR, which was probably more with my graphics card Other then that games and software seems to work great on it

and I am able to play all games that I have tried at max settings including Crysis. I like Vista, expect for all the sercurity popups asking is it okay to do something. I know I can turn that off but just havent bothered.

They all work on Vista, even Hitman 1, not to mention 2 and 3, Deus Ex works and HL works.
I've been using Vista x64 ultimate since I built my new rig back in october and it has played everything I've tried so far (mostly new games so far, I haven't installed many of my older games.) If you still have a copy of XP, it's easy enough to partition your harddrive and do a dual OS install, that's what I've done.
A matter of curiousity though; why is it that 16 bit games won't run on x64 vista (or does that apply to x64 XP as well?) I thought that the x64 was just mostly about memory addressing, which is why x64 based OS don't limit your ram to 3.25 gb or so. If anyone knows, or has a link to that info, it would be appreciated. Always trying to learn more about computers :D

Also 32bit games can have 16bit installers that won't run with 64bit.
