Yeah... I really don't have much of a clue regarding hardware.

In 2012 or something like that I bought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE and I was thinking about upgrading the GPU to a 760 or something of the sort, but after seeing the 970, I've decided I want to save up some more for that card. My only question is if I'll be able to install it in my PC.

I don't know much about the specs, other than 8GB of RAM, an i7 2600 processor and a GT 420. They all came with the PC, I haven't touched anything since I bought it.

The computer probably came with a insufficient PSU for a GPU like that so I doubt it. Can you post the power supply model ? Also will there be enough space in your case ?

Well you'll have an easier time running the 970 than the 760.

But yeah, check your PSU.

you will certainly need a psu, psu from a store bought pc are only cheap and can't handle high performance cards without blowing.

mine was a 500w psu from a store bought pc I had and it blew up running a single 7850.

so allocate about another £60 to get a good 600w psu. 80+ certified from brands like xfx,EVGA,antec. it corsair

then as the previous poster said, your case might be too small the 970 is a large sized card.

Thanks for the heads up, my psu is definitely under 500w. Space probably won´t be a problem in the current case, it's pretty roomy, but I'll make sure to be safe.

You're good to go, 500Watts are fine for GTX970 since a whole system with 970 takes only 300Watts.

He has less than 500W PSU. He could have a 300W one.

http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-pavilion-elite-hpe-540es-core-i7-2600-3-4-ghz-8-gb-1-tb/specs/

I found this; if it helps clarify things. It lists the dimensions as well as the psu (460w). Thanks for the help so far :D

Do yourself a favor and upgrade anyway. A good psu goes a long way. I spent $100 on mines and still using it 6/7 years later.

No point in risking a $300+ blowing up on you.

Well, here is what I will tell you. Get a 2 6 pin or 1 8 pin model. Don't buy one with an 8 and 6.

The card should run fine on a 350 watt PSU. Since nothing in your system is OC'ed. I had people running GTX 460's on a 300 watt HP PSU.

Just crack open your case and take a peak at the sticker.

Just for reference I got this big fat power hog GTX 580 with OC'ed CPU going and at load it peaks around 325 watts.

We also need to know the model so we can know the efficiency. It may need around 300watts but it also needs a certain amount of amps to run stable.
