Will my computer work with a 120hz or 144hz monitor?

Here are the specs:

AMD FX-6100 3.3GHz

64 bit Six-Core Processor

10GB DDR3 1333

1.5TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 5400RPM

AMD Radeon HD 7450

What? Yes, but a 120 or 144 Hz monitor will be totally useless with that graphic card.

Your video card is weak sauce and won't output that many frames in games. With that setup, I'd just go with a 60hz IPS panel and enjoy the pretty colors and slower refresh rate. Could find a nice 5ms 60hz.

well ive had my computer for awhile now cost about $1,500 if you include the monitor. What would be a really good graphics card to get to fully utilize a 120 or 144hz monitor?

I heard the new Nvidia graphics cards are really good, because they will work great with the new asus g-sync monitors coming out next year. Should I get one of those graphics cards? I don't know exactly what they are called.

Basically, it's going to depend on the game. Run fraps while playing games with your current setup, and turn off any vsync and/or framerate caps. Even though your current monitor (assuming it's 60hz) won't show more than 60 fps, it will still let games render faster, if you have the power for it. Use fraps to monitor your framerates, and see how high they go. If you reach 100+ fps regularly, than a 120hz monitor might be worth the investment.

The monitor I want is the Asus VG248QE as long as I can get 100hz with my graphics card that way I can use the lightboost technology then il just keep this one.

i was talking to fatal1ty about it too(we both have the vg248qe), we both agreed the 1/2 brightness reduces your awareness way too much

everyone i know has said the same thing too, zubin, muktar(tribes player), and basically anyone good

144hz and the high brightness is definitely the way to go. set the tracefree to 100 if you want to be hardcore

I heard the picture quality on the vg248qe at 144hz is terrible though, but is good at 120hz. That's just what I heard not from personal experience with the monitor. From experience how does it handle at 60hz? I might use it for console gaming but if it is really good at 144hz or 120hz with lightboost and I get a better graphics card, then I might just use my PS4 controller for my pc and start pc gaming too.

btw JigglyWIggly I don't know if you have heard yet but you should check out the g-sync technology that is supposed to be in the upcoming asus monitors. They are going to make the vg248qe monitor that you have now but pretty much just upgraded with g-sync instead of v-sync.

Yeah, you definitely need a new power supply. Next time that you buy a computer, you should come here and ask for advice about it before you pull the trigger..

I got my computer a long time ago I didn't really know much about computers back then and it was mainly just used for doing homework.

That SeaSonic looks like a really good power supply. Do you think I need 850W though? Cause I was looking at a Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W ATX12V v2.01 SLI for about half that price.

Also, I was looking at either getting the GeForce GTX 690 or 670 graphics card to be able to use that g-sync technology if I decide to wait for the new asus vg248qe monitor to come out next year.

G-Sync will take some load off of the GPU over V-Sync, but I would wait for some reviews before committing to it. I'm worried about input lag is all. And I'm much more excited for AMD's mantle API. It gives developers low level access to AMD hardware, much like console API's do. It's how consoles have better performance than similar PC hardware. Mantle can give up to 9 times more draw calls per second, which is amazing..

Also, if you're going to get an nVidia card, definitely don't get the GTX 680. The 4GB GTX 770 is both cheaper and more powerful than the GTX 680...

As for the power supplies, it depends on what upgrades you plan to make. I definitely wouldn't get that Rosewill, though. It doesn't have an efficiency rating and it uses 2x weak 12v rails. These are much better budget options. Both will supply more amperage to the 12v rail...

So you think I should invest in an AMD graphics card over a NVidia graphics card? I know AMD is usually cheaper and you can get the same performance for much cheaper price.

I checked out that graphics card does look pretty good with them 3 fans to help keep it cooled down, but im looking more In the range of a good $200-$300 graphics card. The monitor im getting is going to set me back $300 plus I have to get a Ethernet port since mine on my motherboard is shot and the power supply.
