my motherboard is the asus sabbertooth 990fx & my currently installed cpu is a amd phenom II x6 1100t. I just purchased an fx 8320 & I know a bios update is required but I don't know if my plan is viable. I can update them through ai suite but can I do that with my current cpu

Yes, the 8320 works perfectly good with that MOBO.

Q: why did you pay more on the MOBO than the CPU itself?

I bought the mobo a year & a half ago with the intention of upgrading later

can I update the bios to the ones for the 8320 while my 1100t is still installed

I wouldn't do that, install the new CPU, then update the BIOS.

really wouldn't that involve not using ai suite & using a different method. won't the current bios prevent the pc from booting up once the new cpu is installed

Why would you suggest that? The latest BIOS supports old CPU's, not the other way round. He could probably boot with 8320 and old BIOS as well, but I'd definitely update BIOS first.

Oh, and don't update BIOS in Windows, do it in BIOS itself with a USB memory. It's really easy.
