Hi folks, I really want to get this game, but I held off thinking my CPU would struggle too much. However, Ive seen various videos on Youtube of people running this game on AMD Phenom II CPUs and it doesnt look too bad.

I also have a GTX570 and 8GB RAM

You should be ok. Phenom II is still a decent CPU . If you have windows 7 just make sure you unpark your cpu cores ( google it ).

If battlefield 3 is any indication i can play the multiplayer part with a phenom II 955 and a similarly performing to your gtx570 7850Gpu at ultra settings and minimum frame rates never drop below 35-40fps on the larger maps ( on smaller maps i rarely see it drop below 45-50fps )

Cool, thanks guys, I have every intention of upgrading, but at least the performance will be good enough to tie me over

@adamosmaki: I tried unparking my cores and BF4 still doesn't want to perform well for me :(

I've got:

  • Phenom II X6 1055T @ 2.8GHz
  • GTX 570
  • 8GB RAM

Even trying to play at all low settings, my FPS can hover around 20-30.

Quite honestly, I think you have a setting messed up. It could be your video cards drivers are overriding settings. Because on low, BF4 should be playable with your setup. Although, I do admit that I've never played the game and I'm just guessing, but I can't possibly conceive that they would design the game to be unplayable on your system. That just doesn't make business sense. They want to sell to as many people as possible and your system isn't *that* old. I really find it hard to believe that you need to upgrade to play on low settings.

mind you overclocking phenomII can make a ton of difference. I run mine at 3,7ghz over the default 3,2ghz. I'm certain that with an overclock to 3,3-3,4 you will see a substantial performance boost since that Phenom II x6 is still a decent Cpu . Maybe try updating your drivers as well ? With your setup even though some drops to 25-30fps at large maps with 64 players is normal for an older quad core cpu ( hence why a 500-600mhz overclock will keep you above the 30fps threshold ) you should be averaging at least 50fps on medium/high settings ( if not more )

Just out of curiosity what is your minimum frame rate with that cpu ? I have the same CPU at 3,7ghz and with battlefield 3 i see some dropdowns to mid 30's at large maps with 64 players which is a bit annoying and since i consider buying BF4 i want to get an idea what should i expect on the largest maps ( its what i usually play )

Ive seen is dip into the upper 40's lower 50's when crap load happens like a jet crashing onto a tank lol. When I played BF3 with my old 560 on high settings I had a 55-60 fps average on 64 mp maps, it would also dip into the 40's but I never seen 30's . One major issue Ive seen the the BF3/4 is memory usage on system and Vram can make or break your framerates.

Ive seen BF 3/4 allocate nearly 6gb by themselves

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies, on one of the videos, the person who uploaded the video said that in some maps, he gets slowdowns which dip into the 20fps area. So with that in mind, I think I will just wait untill I upgrade to a new CPU (looking at the i5 4670k). My graphics card should handle it at medium at 1080p shouldnt it? I have a GTX570

Everything is possible if you're willing to tweak the settings. My buddy recently did this build and plays in low 1080p or goes to 720p no problem:

@_SKatEDiRt_: I must be smoking some good stuff, because I was convinced I was running it on a Phenom ii 955, not a 8150 :p

Lower some graphics settings like turn Vsync off, AA off, Shadows off/lowest as possible.
