IMO, I'd either get 2x8 gb ram or just one stick of 8gb ram, then add another 8 later when you have extra cash. 8GB barely cuts it these days.

16GB ram is a waste of budget in an $800 PC, the 8GB he's picked will be fine.

I'm assuming you have the other parts you need already?

8gb is more then enough and you can always add more later if needed, not sure what your talking about most games still rarely use more then 3-4gb.

I have a 500GB hd and 530w PSU I can use. I can upgrade those as well as cooling it better as I go. I might consider 16gb at some point down the road, I don't think it's necessary at the moment.

I have a pc I'm using now that I built and I can salvage the hd and psu. I have monitor and keyboard. The case is trash though and needs thrown out. I'm not sure about SLI.

If you're not sure about SLI you can save 50$ on MOBO and get other good stuff such as good cooling for your CPU so you can OC it.

Also a question do you plan to OC CPU or GPU?

I haven't had much success in the past with OC, I'm a bit impatient. The last time I tried I blew up a GPU :(

Ok how about this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2T3D4 you have extra 50$ to add some extra case fans.

Is a micro ATX case or mini ITX possible? Also, I'm not sure I need the ssd?

I really like this case: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8748309&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&utm_source=Linkshare&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=8BacdVP0GFs&AffiliateID=8BacdVP0GFs-by0QxKxUa859UB6pw2vM7w

It reminds me of a Steam machine.

Note I've changed your case into 300R it's worth the extra 2$; SSD will shorten in game loadings, that is if you install games on it - it's not a must but you'll notice the speed of your new rig.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2T3KT I've replaced the 300R into Prodigy, I hope you like it =)

Nice, just what I was looking for. The only questions I have is will that CPU cooler fit into that case? The reviews say it's rather large. And will there be heating issues with a smaller case like that? Also, I'm not sure about the motherboard, I'd rather stick to Asus or Gigabyte. Is there a difference between micro ATS and mini ITX boards?

Yup, you can fit even Noctua D14 cooling into that case.

As long as you stick withing the 1-2 GPUs range inside that case it'll be alright.

You can pick Asus or Gigabyte if you like but MSI and ASrock are excellent choices as well - I only choose good brands, even if you're extremely budget limited.

I've changed the MOBO into the exact same module I'm currently using: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2T3YR I hope the extra 6$ is withing your budget limit because it's the cheapest I could find.

See, that's what I was suggesting. Since dual channel isn't going to give any real performance boost, getting one stick of 8gbs is probably going to cost the same as 2x4gbs, but is more upgradeable. But whatever you want, it's your computer.

So I've been tweaking this list a bit before I order (it's the weekend, not going to ship out until Monday anyway) and added an extra $150 to my budget. I've changed out the recommended motherboard to, what I believe to be, a higher quality one and decided to go with the 4670K since I'm not very good at OC. I'm debating if I want to go with 2x8gb or 1x8gb/2x4gb but I believe 8gb should be enough for the moment.

Here's what I've come up with: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2TCNC

This was the recommendation: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2T3YR

There's actually a bundle that includes the 760, 4670K and the 120gb ssd.

This doesn't make any sense.

K version is meant to be easier to OC.

Also note that you don't need 16Gb of RAM for gaming, if you're aiming for editing then you'll need those16Gb of RAM or even more and a higher speed ones.

The 4670K is only $20 more and it's included in the bundle with the gpu and ssd, it's not worth it? I'm leaning towards 8GB, I really don't see the reason to spend the extra money when I can put it elsewhere. Not sure if I should go 2x4gb or 1x8gb on that board though. Other than that, do you see any issues with what I changed? Right now, with everything, I still have about $50 to play with.

This looks to be my final revision: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2TCva

The difference between 1 dimm of RAM and dual channel is like comparing cas 9 with 1600Mhz vs. 1333 - sure if you have the extra money or it comes at the same price the choice is simple, but in terms of actuall fps is only 1-3fps difference.

I also don't see the SSD that comes as you say with the bundle.

The promo was on newegg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147247

It came with the above ssd, evga 760 superclock and the i5-4670K. I actually just placed this order 10 minutes ago it came to about $910 including shipping.

IT guy here, allow me to give you a couple of suggestions.

1. I would go with an Asus MB, they make higher quality components than Gygabite, I would suggest the Asus Maximus VI Hero for gaming (great on board sound).

2. Personally I've had bad experiences with Gygabite GPUs and so have other people I know, I would suggest the Asus GTX 760 DC2OC. It's the same price (10$ cheaper right now actually) and has way better build quality and better cooling.

Enjoy your future new PC.

Sadly, I've already placed the order, but I think I did pretty good. This is the most up to date list I posted: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2TCva

With that said, and since you're an IT guy, how much life do you think I'll get out of this build? I know the video card will eventually need to be replaced, probably within a year or so, but I should be good through 2014, right? I'm interested in Thief, Titanfall, Watch Dogs, Dragon Age Inquisition and the Witcher 3. I know the Witcher is going to be a monster, but I should be able to get close to it? 1920x1080

Up to 3 years with mixed graphics of medium and high, you can easy change that to 5 years with adding another GTX760.

@PredatorRules:

oh yeah, the GTX 760 is a 1080p little beast, it will handle anything u throw at it at FULL HD this year, in time u'll need to lower the resolution/settings bit by bit, but you should be fine for quite a while.
