I'd say the 12.11 drivers are still the winners. The 7970ghz outperforms the 680 for less cost, and the 660ti continues to have terrible value by getting comparable performance to a 7870ghz while being the same price as a 7950.

Those two links you made refer to the 310.33 driver. According to the Geforce release, 310.54 adds more performance boosts for other games.

That's not to say I don't agree with you, though. I'd still like to see an independent source to verify the results first.

The first link uses 310.54, and also compares the performace of 310.54 to 310.33, showing there is barely any difference between the two drivers in the stuff tested.

While I have a GTX 690... I'm glad AMD is fighting back. The more competition, the better the prices, better drivers and the faster new cards come out.

Ah, I see. Didn't see that upon first glimpse. Guess it's not looking good right now for Nvidia...

Just to be sure that they are actually "tweaking" the numbers, though, I'd like to see a BF3 benchmark comparison, since that does show a significant jump.

I had to uninstall the 12.11 beta because it was screwing up Photoshop. If I tried to use a hue that had the blue levels at 100%, it would show up as a pixelated black splotch with the correct hue aroudn the edges. It's too bad, because I rather liked the performance boost in my games. Hopefully they fix t for the official release, because it was working fine up until today.

AMD needs to fix it's CPU side.

Which 12.11 beta? There are multiple 12.11 Beta releases e.g. 12.11 Beta 4, 12.11 Beta 6, 12.11 Beta 7.

Use radeonpro and set up game profiles.

I doubt you see the same improvements, these newer drivers tend to focus on Fermi+ architectures.

Yeah, probably not worth the risk of installing beta drivers.

Other than a couple oddball reviews, I thought most data indicate the GTX 680 slightly outperformed the 7970? I have both cards, but the radeon just sits around in a box. I can't even get rid of it on CL for $350

Depends on the benchmark mix.

For example

7970GEvsGTX680.jpg

7950Flex_Vs_660TiPE.jpg

Light weight games from Activision-Blizzard would skew the average.

A customer can buy a new HIS branded 7970 for $376.9(after rebates) with 3 bundled games (FarCry3, HitMan, Sleeping Dogs). Link http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=70&sort=a5

Nice find. AMD has been kicking arse.

Cat 12.11 Beta 8 has been released http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1211betadriver.aspx

  • Improves performance up to 5% in Max Payne 3
  • Includes single GPU performance updates for Far Cry 3
  • Improves CrossFire scaling for Planetside 2 (Crossfire scaling is still limited to ~30% at 2560x1600)
  • Resolves the Skyrim lighting issue (missing a lighting pass) for the AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
  • Resolves the hang encountered playing Dishonored on the AMD Radeon HD 6000 and AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series
  • AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta 8 for Linux includes significant performance improvements for Left for Dead 2

That's good to know. I have the 6xxx series GPUs and I was planning on getting Dishonored for the PC, so it's good to see that they patched it. I just downloaded this new Catalyst 12.11. So far so good.

The price is nice, but unfortunately the XFX version is the only 7970 that will fit inside my Storm Scout. It's not like I can afford a new GPU at the moment anyway, though.

This guy has tested these new drivers vs the older 310.33 driver. He has an EVGA 680 at 1305mhz, he also has a 7970 at 1295mhz to compare to and the 7970 is obviously on the 12.11 drivers. http://www.overclock.net/t/1322119/12-11-vs-310-33 According to him there's no gains at all with the games he tested. With other games there might be huge gains, what do i know.
