I'm looking to get a new TV for my gaming room before the next gen systems come out. I'm reading a lot of places that Plasma is great for gaming, but im open to any suggestions of bands and specs of tvs. I'm looking to spend under $1,000 and also keep the size of he TV between 45-50 inches.  My main TV is a 55 inch LED which is good for gaming, but IMO to big to stare at for hours.

Thanks,

Plasmas eventually lose their color and brightness. The very dim TVs in stores are usually plasmas.

Plasmas have better contrast and deeper blacks but are generally less bright so may not be ideal in a bright room.

Just remember that most specs you read will essentially be made up. Interpolation only adds input lag so is useless for gaming.

Don't worry about Hz if u go with Plasma. A 60hz Plasma has hold times that are twice as fast as a true120hz monitor. That's what cancels out motion blur, and makes movement look more fluid

The newest Samsung Plasmas can get very bright, not LED bright but twice as bright as other Plasmas, and they have great filters for reflections too

Currently, both Hz and Contrast Ratio are total lies from TV companies. There is no such technology as 240Hz. Most TVs are much lower than they state. The only ways to know that one is truely 120Hz is to either get a 3D TV (since 120Hz is necessary for them to work) or to attach a computer to its HDMI port and see if the Windows setting will go as high as 120Hz. As for Contrast Ratio, most of them are 1,000:1. Don't believe anything else.

EDIT: Okay, so my number for contrast ratio at the end was wrong. Go tell the local police about it. What's important is that manufacturers lie about it with horribly exaggerated numbers so that it's impossible to tell what the real contrast ratio is without reading some very good reviews.

Any suggestions on Tvs under $1000? If you can toss some links in I want to see if I'm coming up with the same.

"most of them are 1,000:1" Uh, maybe most LED TVs are around 1000:1, but plasma TVs haven't been as low as 1000:1 since 2005. The Pioneer Kuro KRP 500 from 2008 revolutionized HDTV picture quality with a 37 000 : 1 contrast on a full white and full black screen (22,000:1 ANSI, which is 4x4 black and white checkerboard pattern to simulate real world content) while for example last year's budget Panasonic ST50 has around 9000:1 contrast ratio. Today's top of the line plasmas (Panasonic ZT60 & VT60) are capable of producing a contrast as high nearly 100,000:1 (full white / full black) and 25,000 ANSI contrast.

40-50 inch is by no means ideal.. The bigger the better. I certainly enjoy gaming on my 100" screen and only wish I had a bigger room and better projector to light up a 120", 150" or even 200"+ screen :shock: :shock: !

Yeah, the pixels are essentially little gas powered light bulbs. The gas burns up as time goes on, and the picture gets dimmer and dimmer. Plus, they use a lot more electricity, and they tend to run very hot...

It's fine. from 6 feet you could easily have a 50" plasma, without any strain.

Don't worry about Hz if u go with Plasma. A 60hz Plasma has hold times that are twice as fast as a true120hz monitor. That's what cancels out motion blur, and makes movement look more fluid

Aren't a lot of plasmas 600hz? Curious. I've seen some panasonics that say 600hz. I don't know if that's just a marketing ploy, or if theyre really 600hz? I don't own any plasmas myself. I have 2 LEDs(60 Vizio Razor LED, 55in Toshiba LED), and 3 LCDs(55in Toshiba LCD, 46in Sony Bravia LCD, 26in Toshiba LCD). I thought about getting a LG 60 plasma, but I was worried about the potential burn-in.

I wouldn't mind about hz numbers. They are all bullsh1t anyways. Apparently, Panasonics plasmas this year are 2400mhz, that's right.. 2.4ghz...

It refers to 10 zones each refreshing at 60hz IIRC. It's hard to compare with plasmas because the technology is very different.

If I;m going to go LED. What are the ideal specs for it 240Hz what a good lagg time for a tv less than 20ms? Plasma is what a few of my friends game on and they swear by them.

Thats a bunch of crap haha true 120hz is 120hz 600hz plasma is still ONLY 60HZ. Get your info straight lol

Only two things I'd worry about are:

* input lag

* motion resolution

none of this 60-2400hz crap.

Plasma is cheaper, but also use more energy and generate more heat. Still... you can have tremendous picture quality and get a bigger screen for the money, so that's how I roll. The brightness fades over time, but only slightly... if you re-calibrate every 6-12 months, should be just dandy.

you have to really screw up the settings to make it look 'washed out'. There was a time when plasma TV's had burn in issues that would discourage gaming on them, but those days are gone. Nowadays plasma just dominates LED in every aspect.... Price point, motion, side viewing angle , deep black levels that LED's are still nowhere close to.. the only thing LED's are good at is misinforming the naive public about what matters in a TV. Are plasma's reflective ? yes.. because they have real glass screens... just like old CRT TV's.. if you could play games on those .. you can play them on a plasma. Does the picture fade.. eventually .. just like everything else , wear and tear effects every item.. 20 years from now you may have to replace it.
