I'm getting my first gaming laptop (yes, not a desktop, because I'm a mobile kind of person) in a few days, and was curious about a small thing I read on some other forum about gaming while the battery isn't attached (but the laptop plugged in, of course). I'm guessing this is to prolong the battery's overall life, and to keep it from heating up the other components?

Sorry for being such a small and quick question, but I felt like asking, lol.

That is true, the hotter the battery the faster it will degrade.

(Warning anecdotal evidence, my friend has the same laptop as me, and he always took his battery out and I didn't. His motherboard fried one time from taking the battery out, so there's that.) On the bright side according to batterybar his battery wear was 2.8% while mine was 13% and he used his laptop more than me.

I guess it'll be good to do it when it's hibernating, lol. But thanks for the reply and help! I've never been familiar with taking care of batteries, especially in my electronics. I usually just use them, and don't bother with it. The battery on my current laptop failed on me (it was kind of funny because it said that it needed to be replaced legit right after I got it back from Tiger Direct after the hard drive failed) after 3 years, so I got a new one, and it's back to normal. It didn't seem like it was steadily dying out; it just seemed like it went from one day lasting 2 hours, as usual, and then all of a suden it would only last 30 minutes.

I'm definitely going to try my best to take care of this new one, especially since it costs $3k x)

Well don't charge the battery fully and leave it aside, it could leak.

Correct method is to take the battery out ONLY when the laptop is FULLY OFF (not sleep or hibernate) and NOT plugged into the power.

I only game on the laptop while it's plugged in to AC power. My ASUS 14" RoG G46VW is automatically set to use the Intel HD 4000 when using battery power and the GTX 660m when plugged in (and gaming).

The battery is internal and not normally user-replaceable. I keep it plugged in anytime I'm at home. So far, I've had it for a year and a half and I still get 6-7 hours battery life with non-gaming use.

@jesuschristmonk: It's to keep the battery healthy. You will never really use the battery anyways. If you game off the battery you will notice decreased FPS and the battery will drain very quickly. You should always be plugged in. There should be options to only charge it if it goes below a certain percent which you can set. I'm the resident hardcore laptop gamer around here. If you have any questions then hit me up. What did you end up getting?

It's fine to take it out during hibernation, there is no power drain.

I was originally going to go with one of the MSI laptops with the 880m, but then I found out about Sagers, and the option to have bone stock Windows 7 intrigued me, so I decided to go with the NP377-S. Was a good thing that I waited a bit to get it since the 980m just recently came out, and the price didn't even seem like it changed.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I've been itching to play all of thegames I've accumulated over the past 2 years from all of the Steam sales, and I'll finally be able to tomorrow!

Never buy HP or Toshiba-branded laptops, especially for gaming.

I prefer ASUS myself. But, there's also MSI and Alienware for dedicated gaming laptops. Why pick them? It's because they're plumbed for maximum cooling.

If you want business-style gaming laptops, there's Sager and Lenovo. But, I still prefer dedicated gaming laptops over them.

Yep same here.. On a side note debating on venturing in dissembling my 46vw to install a 32gb SSD cache drive to help with load speeds.. Have you attempted anything like that yet with your 46vw?

Not really because Win 8.1 is fast enough when coupled with the default 5400rpm 750gb SATA HDD and 8gb DDR3 RAM. The most taxing games I've played on my G46VW are Crysis 3 (med textures/high detail) and Far Cry 3 (High preset) and the laptop handled both games just fine. It also helps my LCD max res is only 1366x768. Now that I'm done traveling for a while, I've taken those games out and installed older games like STALKER: CoP, C&C 3, Crysis 2 (DX9 Ultra). These are even less of a strain on the G46VW.

I only upgrade when I feel there is a need. Perhaps a year or two down the road I may upgrade the hard drive. Once I decide to upgrade, I have no qualms about disassembling the laptop. I've done similar stuff with my previous laptop and Mac Mini.

i7 4810MQ 2.8 ghz, 980m, 8gb 2x4gb (figure I didn't need any more, along with saving on price and power consumption a bit), 120gb Samsung 840 EVO SSD OS Drive, 1TB 840 EVO, Bluray, and overclocked the video card.

I hope I did good :)

You did good. You should be able to max out pretty much everything.
