I have a Gateway PC with a BTX form factor. The CPU is cooled by the front case fan's air which is directed over the CPU's heatsink. This is why this front case fan is plugged into the mobo (I'm guessing the fan's speed varies according to the CPU's temperature).

Can I buy a replacement case fan that has this same function (sensing the CPU temp)? What type of connector do I need to look for on the replacement?

The fan is 120mm. Would this fan do the job?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999122

This function is usually carried out with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) which is present on fans with a four pin connector. Some motherboards have the voltage regulation hardware required to do it with a 3-pin fan, but you should check the existing fan just to make sure.

I see. So stick with the type of connector that I already have. Thanks.
