 That's a good one.

The piracy rate of 94% for that game is just sad though.

The true irony is that the pirates will not realize that they are the very same as those in the game.

This is soo working in their favor. the game is getting mass marketing from this lol

I downloaded the demo is quite fun. considering buying it

that 94% is out the window it's more like 99.8% now. I was considering downloading the torrent just to experience the fun everyone is talking about

That is pretty damn funny. Although, the end of the article mentions that the genuine game is DRM-free, anyway. Wonder how long it will be before "genuine" copies are floating around torrent sites.

So the dev got back at pirates by uploading their crappy game onto torrent sites? Considering the fact that the game hasn't appeared on any major DD platforms and hasn't been followed at all in the gaming press it would seem that they are using this as a marketing ploy to attract buyers.

I saw this over at RPS, and this comment on the website is something I agreed with at least regarding this whole ordeal: "He put the game on a popular piracy site, of course there were illegal downloads. He has no advertising and no press, of course he had zero sales. This seems like a marketing stunt to me, and the reason the game is pirated is unrelated to the reason he has (had) so few sales. Edit: my point is that 96% piracy makes headlines, and is easy as hell to reproduce. No publicity gets you about 4 sales, while people 96 people downloading random apps from the new section on TPB gets your game, is a result from that being the only popular site where your game is mentioned, and creates your publicity stunt 96% figure without much piracy at all." TL;DR - It is no more than a marketing stunt to promote this game.

This "troll" DRM is simply the best type and the one that should be encouraged.

Legitimate customers get the best version of the game, while pirates are stuck with a broken copy. NOT the other way around.

Hopefully this news will lead to more sales for them. Hilarious what they did, There have been companies in the past that did similar things. An old RTS game let you play and build up for a little while, then after a specific time your entire base would explode.

There was an old school RPG that let you play the entire game with no issues, but at the final boss, the game would freeze and erase your save file. I'm trying to find it, but I'm having no luck. :(

Hahahah, awesome. It's also awesomely hilarious that they "borrowed" this game and then complain when their work is stolen. This is just a big silly box of irony ready to be opened.

I played Game Dev Story a while back on my phone, pretty entertaining game but I don't think I'll be buying tycoon just for how similar  *cough* COPY *cough* it is to story.

I think either in Arma, or operation flashpoint, Or a game like it.

Turned your soldier into a bird after a while if you pirated the game.

They released their game on a torrent site. Otherwise no one would have heard of it and this article wouldn't exist. Therefore, file sharing has increased word-of-mouth marketing and at the cost of $0.00. Sounds like a pretty damn good deal to me. If people like the game, they will obviously start pouring money into it. I mean, when Doom and Quake started off with Shareware (that is when Shareware still existed) and quickly grew id software into a game industry giant. Sharing is caring people. And caring people like to help other caring people. Indie developers stand to gain a lot of support by embracing the file sharing communities of the world.

The piracy rate of 94% for that game is just sad though.

flipin_jackass

I think it's because the game doesn't have any official outlets like Steam or Origin supporting it, while they have no marketing or anything. So of course, torrent sites will be where lots of people hear about it and download it.

Yeah I wonder why there aren't more of these "troll" DRMs.

I would imagine you don't see more of them because other than being a good publicity stunt, the turn-around time for the pirate release groups catching and removing such DRM methods, especially when its revealed to the public, is too swift to really make it useful. I don't imagine that the pirates were 'stuck' with a broken copy, as Mozuckint alluded to, for very long.

Even though it might sound odd, or pretentious. There is actually artistic value on 'trolling' game mechanics like this. It may do a good job of provoking players to think about it the issue presented, especially if the core game revolves around managing a video game studio. So simple, so clever and so amusing.

You forgot to mention as a pro that this generated quite a bit of publicity. I know quite a few people who bought the game after hearing these news.

94% piracy rate?

disgusting

JigglyWiggly_
Daniel Petric the game is not on steam just on the devs website that's why it's a 94% pirating. It's because no one knows the game exists. This is just a stunt to get green lite. There was only 300 copies of the game sold so were not talking tens of thousands of pirated copies.........

Why don't devs upload a "cracked" copy to torrent sites with a virus that wipes the HDD clean on installation? It's nothing less than they deserve.

Yeah i noticed that, that's actually the first thing that came to my mind when i saw the title even before i clicked this thread anyway the game looks interesting too bad it's not on iOS (would've preferred it on iOS/Android when it comes to games like this)

You can't break the law just because someone else did. If you run a shop and someone steals a chocolate bar you can't shoot them.
