Indeed there is a gaping whole in the world. There has never been a game that matched 1942, even BF2 (peashooters and horrible network code/hit detection. I am crossing my fingers for BF3, but won't be getting my hopes up, 90% of devs these days do not know how to make games properly.Battlefield 2 was pretty much the last really good BF game. Bad Company 2 was okay, but dumbed down because of the console versions. Star Wars Battlefront II is also a good game, but I wouldn't recommend it since the online is nearly dead these days. Much like BF1942, it's hard to find good servers to play on.

Really nothing like BF1942. The scale of the battles, the variety of vehicles, the openness of the maps, it's a totally different experience.
BF1942 actually feels like a war rather than a minor skirmish between special forces.
My relatives still have BF1942 on the local LAN since the PCs and laptops that connect range from new to dinosaurs. But they play mostly the Desert Combat mod.

Exactly. Bad Company 2 has "console" written all over it.
Battlefield 1942 had a medic class. I have been looking over these newer games and some aren't clear as to whether or not they had it ? How many of the war 1st person shooters have it ? I know COD: Black Ops does not have a medic class. I think the medic class is what made Battlefield 1942 awesome and honestly would like to know what others games have it.DeViLzzz
I also really like playing as a Medic. Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2 have that class as well, but outside the BF series, I really don't know.

EXACTLY. BF1942 felt like a complete war, not just a skirmish, which is what EVERY other FPS feels like. Hoping BF 3 will bring back the classic "complete battle" feel - Where you can take off from one carrier to bomb another carrier, or use snipers to spot for artillery a mile away. Sigh.... I miss it so much. From what everyone has said it seems there really isn't anything out there like it any more :(This, by alot more realitisc, we mean ALOT.Wait for Red orchestra 2, its similar to the BF series, but a lot more realistic.

Completely different game altogether. Part of the fun of the BF series is that it has a balance between realistic and unrealistic that makes it loads of fun.
I am not saying RO is not fun, I find it fun, but it's a completely different style game to me.
1942 in essence to me is running up Omaha beach, bombing the crap out of something or getting into dog fights and then bailing over the enemy base and sniping people, or running through the alleys of Stalingrad and capping flags.

I don't have high hopes about it from what I've read, they're taking it in a weird direction when what would make sense is to redo Tribes 2 with modern graphics and physics. Also, never heard of the developer.
