It can vary depending on my money situation at the time.

I'd spare no expense if I had the money.

When I was still active in MP, usually ~$1800. After I quit MP and stuck with SP only? Around $800-$1000.

I don't include monitors because I use TVs at home. For example, my primary PC monitor has been a 24" 1080p TV that I bought for $200 back in 2010. Once it breaks, I'll consider newer alternatives.

@Commiesdie: Usually it's 1500$ for brand new rig, but in my country taxes are high so if I made the same build on US it'll be around 900$.

I just built this rig. It includes peripherals and monitor. It is above your price range but not sure if you take out the monitor and extras (The amount of SSDs and HDDs that I have). My Build

I haven't done a whole new build in many years. I just swap out parts. I recently changed my Mobo, CPU, and RAM, but I kept my case, video card, sound card, SSDs, HDDs, DVD drive, and all peripherals.

In terms of budget... I don't really have one. I just buy what I want unless I can not justify the cost. I will not buy something like the Titan XP because it is such a ripoff and I hate what it stands for (Nvidia greed), but I don't feel guilty buying a 1080.

Likewise here.

Though atm I am considering saving up money for a whole new rig. I am waiting for both Skylake-X and Ryzen 8C/16T to be released and then deciding. Though it will cost... New case, radiators, fans, CPU block. I got a waterpump already. Handy to have as a spare if my other one breaks (if I decide not to build a whole new rig). As for GPU, I think I'll reuse an old one until Volta/AMD answer has been released.

That's a full tower right? I'm using a super tower right now... It's huge. I will keep it though. Using it with older hardware for folding if I do get a new case.

Yea its a full tower. Only thing that it lacks is USB 3.0 front ports and 2.5" brackets for SSD's.

@horgen:

My motherboard supports M.2, I dont see the point in them for typical usage since you really cant see the difference. and their more expensive. But all I need to do for sata SSD's with my case is to use 3.5" adapters which I can print them out when I need them.

I thought about getting an M.2 SSD, but I figured regular SSD is already fast enough for my needs. I would consider buying one if the prices were a lot cheaper.

@BassMan: I am not exactly sure of the difference as I just built my first PC and built the machine that I wanted after doing ton of research. However, by the time I turn my PC on and sit down, windows is up in no time. Just a few seconds. This is my current setup. The price obviously includes monitor and peripherals so it may seem high.

My build

You can build one hell of a computer with $1500 US

I think the best bang for your buck is probably around the $1000 US mark, maybe a little less. If you're only interested in gaming you can get a relatively cheap CPU, mobo, RAM, case, PSU (500-700W from good manufacturer); spend the extra $$ on a GPU and SSD. Also, don't overlook the display.

LD Cooling V-8. With 3 thick radiators and low fan speed (720-730rpm) I can keep a delta T water temperature at 12C or less with hardware like SLI GTX 980Ti (moderately OC'ed) and a 6600K running at 4.5. My loudest components are the waterpump and PSU fan. I can live with the fan noise from the PSU, but the pump is killing it for me right now =/

@Commiesdie: Yea...I do alright for myself. I will be adding custom cables (black, silver, and purple) pretty soon to complete the look that I want. I even painted the ram sticks and the corsair logos. I have changed my wallpaper on my PC since this pic was taken. This was the first day that I had it turned on ready to go.

If I were build a new PC from scratch I would be going with...

  • i7 7700K
  • Be Quiet! Silent Loop 280 Cooler
  • MSI Z270 Gaming M5 Board
  • MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X
  • Corsair Vengence LED 2x 8GB DDR4 3000 RAM
  • Samsung 1TB SSD Evo
  • Seagate Firecude 2TB SSHD
  • Be Quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 with Window Case
  • Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 850w Platinum PSU

That's pretty much what I would be buying. Trouble is though I don't actually need it... But want it.

$2173

Plan on building the same thing with what ever i7 is around when the new Nvidia GPU's hit with HBM Till then I will stick with my i5 4670K and GTX 1070.

I only spent a like $1100 back in 2008 since then I only upgraded. Never ever a complete overhaul. I think the last surviving relics in my system is my z5300 logitech 2005, zalman nvidia cooler 2008 and hx520 corsair 2008. Everything else is 5 years tops in age.

I have no idea how much my PC has cost at this point. Quite a lot. Over the course of its life my rig has had:

  • One CPU upgrade
  • Two GPU upgrades
  • One RAM upgrade
  • an HDD upgrade and an SSD added
  • Three additional cooling fans
  • A keyboard and mouse upgrade

As I've sworn off anything with less than 6 cores, tossing together parts on PCPartpicker for a hypothetical new build generally comes out at around $2000 (x99 mobos are so expensive), but with AMD Ryzen looks like it could be a few hundred less.

Oh man it's been so long since I've done a fresh, from-scratch build. I would really like to do one but I just can't justify it. I mean technically I can totally afford it but I don't need it, and I can play all my stuff just fine, so why would I?

Anyway, to answer the question, I upgrade, and I generally never spend more than 500, and it's usually only like 300 unless it's something important like a vid card and Christmas just came then I treat myself.

But it'd be nice to have like an existing computer, and then a project going on, take my time, do it right and spend like a couple of weeks doing a really nice job, maybe do some fabrication or paint work myself even. I work with glycol and cooling systems at work, I think it'd be fun to sort of design my own cooling loop too using stuff from my industry lol, make it look kind of industrial. I might set aside 2-3K one of these days and go crazy lol.

@BassMan: those aren't rocks, they're ice cubes! To keep his rig cold :P
