Big fan of sci-fi horror. From the Alien franchise to Killer Clowns from Outer Space.

*Phantasm*
I love Phantasm, I love the borderline whimsical nature of it, how it sort of has traditional horror but also sci-fantasy.
i like them, i just haven't found many that are good. im not into gore porn like saw and hostel.
the last one i saw that i thought was pretty decent was talk to me. i tried no one will save you which was very polished and intriguing, i just didn't get some aspects including the ending. maybe a second watch will help, or just some googling. just watched five nights at freddies which felt promising at first but ultimately fell flat. got the new exorcist on my backlog to watch. might watch it on halloween.
to answer the question in the op i prefer psychological thriller horrors like silence of the lambs, misery, clovehitch killer, get out etc.
My favorite has to be Alien taken as a standalone film. A deep sci-fi mystery that leaves you with the perfect mix of questions and answers to get your mind racing combined with perfect execution. It's not often considered in the list of Lovecraftian movies, but it leaves the viewer with that Lovecraftian feeling more effectively than any other movie I can think of

Used to watch Killer Clowns on the Sci-Fi channel when I was a kid. Must of seen it fifty times, but don't think I ever actually sat through the whole thing.
As for Phantasm, there's just something about it. The way it was filmed, that grainy look, low-budget, all ideas, dreamlike feels, absurd inter-outer dimensional story line. And a bad ass ice cream man. The Tall Man is one of the best villains, period. Love the whole series.
@sargentd: HAHA YEAH those are all great.
Thing about being a 90's kid is all the 80's movies is what were shown on TV, I'm guessing since the rights were cheaper to acquire ten or so years later. Cable stations like TNT and USA would always have movies on, it's how I saw those classics.
They'd always do seasonal marathons, too. Like they'd always do a James Bond marathon, then maybe a horror marathon around Halloween, then maybe some other times of the year.

yup so true. USA and TNT played alot of good stuff. i was wearing an Elvira T shirt the other day and a guy started talking to me how he loved watching elvira on usa and it made me realize i havent had cable in like 13 years, not sure if usa even exists anymore
Honestly the horror movies nowadays seem less creative too. The older stuff much more entertaining.
@nod_calypse: always liked puppet master. Underrated series
Yeah, was trying to get my wife to marathon the whole series with me. That's a damn long haul though.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Fall of the House of Usher that just released on Netflix, highly recommend. I'm partial to Mike Flanagan (the director) as his previous works on Netflix (like Haunting of Hill House) were also enjoyable.
I like most horror films except gore. And I have a very high tolerance for crappy movies if they are horror.
I will not tolerate crappy fantasy or science fiction and may even turn away from top notch drama or romance, but I absolutely tolerate below par horror as long as it's not gore.
My favorites are not movies, but books ( though movies were made of these book that were also very good).

@nod_calypse: Wow, I did NOT expect to see The Void here. What did you like about it so much?
I've seen just about every horror film, lol. Probably, definitely, way too many. But I digress.
The Void stands alone, largely. I read a lot of Lovecraft. Beyond the wordiness, or underneath it, there's this mind-bending ambience of dread approaching malaise, that drenches everything. Every page feels like a gaping mouth, stuck open, nonplussed as much as horrified. And there's always this connection to the real world, as if you could just pull back the curtain a few inches, and that would be enough for you to have a life before/ life after moment. The Void captures that feeling like few other films. Another one that did it pretty well is The Beyond, by Lucio Fulci, back in 1981.
Think this is one of the best horror flicks of the last 20 years.
Oh yes, hands down one of the best.
Yea, Prime Video is usually garbage but for Halloween it's been very good.
Re-watched The Beyond yesterday, it's a movie love more and more on rewatches to point it's easily top 5. Love that it gives you basic plot points, but keep it deliberately vague to the point it feels like a dream at times.
Dem practical effects as well.
Jeepers Creepers first film. I still have the urge to watch in now and then. I just don't understand why the sequels fail to replicate it's success. The 2nd was decent, but the rest? *Sigh*...
Evil Dead 2. Absolute classic.
Cloverfield. Not sure if it's considered a true horror movie, but its definitely one of the best "found footage" movie I've ever seen.
IT. The original movie.
i was a little kid in the 1980s and a teen in the 1990s so i have alot of favorite horror movies too many to list here
@sargentd: shout-out to you for giving The People Under the Stairs love. VERY underrated film.
My mother and sister in law came to stay with us for a week visiting, they told me to pick a movie to watch that they haven't seen and that was what I picked. It was pretty hilarious lol
My mother in law "why is dressed in leather" "that boy in the walls needs a bath"

I'm a big fan of Ari Aster's movies Midsommer and Hereditary as their more cerebral movies. I recently watched X and it's prequel Pearl and they where also pretty good.

Been meaning to get a physical copy, and I just found out that Shout Factory has put out a 4K UHD release--good thing tomorrow's pay day.
