Poll Would you ever "out" someone? (12 votes)

Yes 33%
No 67%

As you may have, or not, heard about the controversy surrounding an article written by Caleb Hannan for Grantland.com about Essay Anne Vanderbilt (yes, her name was ESSAY) a women which created a popular golf club but also made some questionable allegations about her academic qualifications and past work with the department of defense. During his investigation into Ms. Vanderbilt background Hannan discovered that Ms. Vanderbilt was previously a man which and had changed her identity. Hannan "outed" Ms. Vanderbilt to one of her investors while she was still alive, yes alive, since you know, Ms. Vanderbilt committed suicide 3 months before Hannan's story was published. Some argue that Mr. Hannan reporting might have contributed to the tragic ending.

So I ask you OT, is ok for someone to "out" someone else? Have you or would you ever do it?

The answer is no. I would never (except on some extreme circumstances) dare reveal something as sensitive, personal and private as someone sexual preference or gender identity when obviously that person prefers that preference or identity to remain a secrete.

Outing someone is sharing a very important secret of theirs without their permission. These days, it often relates to that person's sexuality.

And no, I would never do such a thing. It's so intensely personal and sharing that information can have an incredibly number of repercussions.

So if someone told you they were being abused by a pedophile you wouldn't alert the authorities?

Nope. Its their business and if they want to tell the world at some point in their lives or not at all, I'd let them make that decision....

Not intentionally. Respect for confidentiality is a basic human necessity, and anyone who wouldn't respect that is worth less than dirt.

That's not the backbone I'd come to expect from a Vanderbilt, not from someone who's a descendant from the loins of the Commodore, who wrote one of my favorite revenge letters... "You have undertaken to cheat me. I won't sue you, for the law is too slow. I will ruin you."

Anyhow, this writer was a dick, he had no reason to our her like that except to be a dick.

I wouldn't write off though outing people if they bring it upon themselves, I think the case of the writer who outed the Congressman because he was a hypocritical gay GOP politician who who voted against LGBT interests to further his career while he kept his sex life secret, I'd say that deserves exposing. You can read about that here - https://www.facebook.com/iamitayhod/posts/10153719602440624

So I wouldn't blanket statement say no to outing people, as there are rare exceptions, but beyond those rare exceptions my answer is no.

As far as the story goes, from what I read, this would be a good story if it person the article was centered around gave her blessing. The story itself goes to show how she's gone to great lengths to conceal her identity to protect the information she was previously a man. That alone should have made the reporter think twice about pursuing the story. But maybe the writer did, maybe they didn't, but there's also the editor who is also equally responsible for allowing it to go through.

Would depend on the circumstances really. What if the secret was something criminal? Never say never....

It depends on the kind of "outing" you are talking about. if it's about their sex life, it's nobody's business but their own - UNLESS they are hurting someone else (pedophiles). Then I'd tell the police. But gossip? No, hell no, heck no and N.O.

As a matter of fact, I rather despise people who out (sexually) others. I'd like to ask them WHY they NEED to out other people. A lot of times they out people who are already dead and can't defend themselves one way or the other. Besides who cares if you are hetero/homo/trans, etc etc etc or just like to play with dolls! WHO CARES???!!!!!

No, that's a petty and cheap thing to do.

The only way this would change is with criminal activity being involved. And even then, it would depend on the circumstance.
