Really ? I didn't know that. But as another poster asked: why people named Richard called Dick ? Why they choose a dirty word ?

I don't ever hear young people called Dick, just old people, probably because during one of said generations, the word took on that meaning. That one Dick ruined it for all the Dicks.

It's the shortened version of Richard, I wouldn't call it a nickname. For example, Mike is the shortened version of Michael, but Mikey, or Mickey, is a nickname.

Dick can be an awesome name or a terrible one, depending on what name goes with it.

Dick Lugar = awesome (sounds like a porr star name)

Dick Trickle = terrible

I did go to school with a guy called Richard Head - no joke. Quite what the parents were thinking I don't know.

But dick's alright - some people can pull it off quite well :)

Im not joking- I went to school with a MaryJane Baker. *facepalm*

As for naming your kid dick, that word wasn't a slang term 50-60 years ago. You notice it's only older folks who have that name?

I know a few richards, none of which go by dick. Thank god.

It can mean to botch or mess up, so it might be that someone linked that to someone like saying "Don't be a mess up" like we say "Don't be an idiot", or could be an old detective joke, dick was a word to describe a detective. It could be fooling around, "stop dicking around and do the work". Plenty of meanings other than another name for a penis

At least "BOB" and "ROB" rhyme. Richard,Rich, Rick. Seems more like a spelling mistake than a nickname.

And also, when the hell was Evie short for Genevieve? My older friend's daughter is called Evie, and I thought it was short for Evelyn but apparently not -_-
