Hmm, come to think of it (not that race matters in any way), I think the only black musician I ever listened to often was Killswitch Engage (when Howard was part of it).  

There must be others I just don't remember about, but usually I listen to bands, so it wouldn't be one artist.

MJ back when he was still kind of black.

Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Sonny Sharrock, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra.

Lots of string-based jazz and avant-garde stuff.
