Hmm, come to think of it (not that race matters in any way), I think the only black musician I ever listened to often was Killswitch Engage (when Howard was part of it).

There must be others I just don't remember about, but usually I listen to bands, so it wouldn't be one artist.

No Miles Davis on that list?

He only practically singelhandedly changed the direction of Jazz three or four times in his life. And has one of the highest selling records in all of History.

So What

Gamespot's poll options are just too limited, no matter what 5 artists he included in the poll there would still be some huge names left out

Seems a silly topic to me as it is. There is far too much brilliant music out there to limit it to one person. Although it first appeared on an Album by a White Dude called David Sanborn, Run For Cover is really a Marcus Miller chart. Feel the Funk Baby!!

Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Sonny Sharrock, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra.

Lots of string-based jazz and avant-garde stuff.

Do writers count (they should)? If so, Aaron Mcgruder.
From that list, Hendrix.
From just black musicians, Ray Charles.

Marvin Gaye

Sly and the Family Stone

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Prince and the Revolution

UB40

The Ohio Players

The Stylistics

The Chi-Lites

Jimi Hendrix

I went with Marvin Gaye in the Poll but its too limited. Where's Earth, Wind, and Fire, George Clinton, and Stevie Wonder or even the Temptations. GS has too few options for a Poll on this.

notice I added to my statement before I saw your post

Trust me, I understand the problems with 5 limit, I make polls on GS quite alot. But this is clearly too limited a poll.
