You think of how many die. I think of how many saved.
Sorry. We don't live in a world where there's rainbows and unicorns everywhere all the time. As long as people are different, there will be conflict.

Mmm who exactly did we save? Every war the US has fought in after WW2 was optional and done so for political and economic gain.. In fact two of the larger human rights diseasters, Darfur and Rwanda, was IGNORED by the super powers of the world for the most part..
Possibly through deterrence. That's all I got. It's easy to count bodies, but not so easy to quantify deaths prevented.
Besides, what would you have us do in Darfur? Should the US be the world police and step in whenever we feel the need to pick a side? Or... should we pick our battles so we can spend out resources in areas where we have a vested interest? I would think the latter.
If by "ignored" you mean not in the main stream media at all hours, then yes, it was ignored. However, last time I checked the ICC's investigation is still in progress with UN folks in-country. I don't mean to downplay what's going on there or in Rwanda or anywhere else in the world, but the US can only go so far.
Looping this back to the main topic... if the US has to build a battleship every few years to project power and put bad guys on notice, then so be it.
